Sending the fs700 to sony for upgrade

I just spoke with a woman from Sony on the phone and she said that the cost of the firmware upgrade is a flat-rate one hour of labor, for a total of $135. She said it's about 6 business days for turnaround... now maybe Teaneck doesn't have the firmware upgrade yet, but it seems strange that their phone support would be trained to address people calling for the upgrade and issue repair forms for it if the shops weren't ready.

This forum has more "I think this is what's happening" than any other I've seen. But I'm spreading misinformation...

I just had my french dealer on phone and he said not to expect anything before end of july/early august, that I must contact Sony's Prime support directly and that the upgrade would cost between 500 and 700€ WITHOUT VAT !

I'm sorry but WTF ???

^YOU F%^king Kidding me.

I called up the Sony service centre in Sydney... they weren't sure what I was talking about. So that's comforting.

If the firmware update don't get to Australia by July. I am going to get my wife to film me throw one them Sony's engineer of a bridge in Slow-motion.

It sounds like there's a lot of Sony people who haven't been informed yet. $135/hour labor is fair enough but what about the physical cost of the hardware too? I think the average random cost is around £500 be it euros or sterling from the sound of it.

But if you buy the IFR internal unit then it's free. Although there's no official price on that yet that i'm aware of.

I feel for anyone who has sent their camera off. That's an awful long wait and Sony have never been on the ball with their timings either...

cheers
Paul

Maybe if u buy an Odyssey7 its also for free because Sony licensed the FS700 Capture for Convergent Design or not. Would be great if Dan could answer this. Because as i see u need the update to use Odyssey too.

I can guarantee that's not the case!

Yes, you need the update for the odyssey. If you think about it everyone who is paying for this update must be buying an odyssey, because the alternative sony solution means you get it for free. I'm not aware of any other solution for the fs700 at the moment or any other reason to get the firmware/hardware upgrade.

cheers

Hold on... this camera was sold as “4K ready” with a future firmware upgrade... In the UK the Trade Descriptions Act requires product descriptions to be accurate. Surely a “4K ready” camera would not require a hardware change? I know the software upgrade could have potentially cost anything, but all the same the fact that the camera needs a hardware change which was not original advertised – does that give us Brits recourse against any hardware charges from Sony?

Some people might really want the S-log2 setting... And for $135 it could be worth it for them.

Is there a separate upgrade for the S-Log only? Sorry what do you mean exactly? Cuz stretching the DR is in many ways more important for me than 4K.

I spoke with Teaneck NJ repair center. They have my camera but have not received to new upgrade parts. There was a confusion with whomever I spoke with on the phone who told me to send it in. They are sending it back, so false alarm. Sorry.

Really this thread should be closed. There is no official announcement about firmware date and location. People have been calling random Sony employees who probably have never even heard of FS700.

Please close this thread as it's just spreading misinformation

Been saying that for the last 3 weeks here in the usa too. It's getting shadier by the day, I feel completely misled. I believe if anyone knew that they needed a hardware add-on prior to purchasing the camera no one would of bought one. They hyped a camera and left out a lot of information especially about the hardware add-on. It was always firmware update, they haven't even revealed what the add-on is yet. If it's anything shy of 10-bit I'll have no choice but to consider other options. Thanks

I received 2 emails from Matthew Troncone, Sony Product Applications Specialist, at Professional Solutions.
After seeing Tony Reale interview Juan Martinez I talked to Matthew Troncone at Sony and he said he will look into it
Etc etc etc. This is what he wrote me

April 15,
1. Hi Anthony
Will require a hardware modification, pricing
TBA, likely 2hrs or so of labor

Regards, thanks for choosing Sony.

Matt Troncone

I emailed him the other day and he got back to me with this.

2. Hi Anthony,
Please call service with this request: 866-766-9272, press option 2.
They can answer your questions directly.

I haven't called yet. I just have no confidence I'll get any info.

Thanks

it's one package deal. you must bring or send your FS700 to the Sony and get one upgrade enable S-Log2 and raw recording function.

there is no "download the firmware from the Sony's website" kinda stuff, we need small surgery in sensor area.

Sorry, but give me a break. The FS700 was a fairly priced camera when it came out with its current capabilities. It built on the $4-5k FS100 with added ND filters, cinegammas, ability to switch from NTSC to PAL, and frame rates that cameras double the price can't even do.

Sure, the 4K sensor (and potential upgrade) can be factored in, but I know myself and many others bought the camera for what it was at the moment. Not because what it might, maybe, someday, potentially do. Hell, I knew how much Sony charged for the F3 firmware update, I figured this update could be $1-2K at least. Instead, it sounds like we're getting some new profile for under $200 and Convergent Design is coming out with a monitor/recorder for about $2300. Not too far off from what myself and others were expecting to pay if we wanted to get into 4K acquisition.

Sounds like you wanted firmware-enabled 4K internal recording... what if their price tag on that firmware-only upgrade was $3000? Is that OK because they didn't ask you to buy anything extra? IMO, it's six of one, half dozen of the other.

nope, that would have been bad business as well. buuut itd at least be what i signed up for w/o the extra weight on my already haavy and getting heavier 4k rig. i can't speak for anyone else but i will say what i expected... again. a 4k ready camera that would be upgraded via firmware and would need an external recorder to get 4k... as it was advertised. not a 1080p camera that would require more money and time for a hardware upgrade, and then the recorder still won't work. i've also got to get the interface unit to go between the recorder and the camera. that is 2 extra paid headache filled steps that they conveniently left out in the beginning with all due respect, why would you hold water for them on this? it makes no since to me.

and since i'm ranting, if you really think clear & straight forward marketing/communication, from a very wealthy and capable company like sony, shouldn't be expected or at the very least important. well go ahead and see if that dog hunts, to the guys who just packed their $9000 livelihoods into shoe boxes and entrusted them to minimum wage employed teenagers, to hopefully arrive at the address of a place that can't upgrade a happy meal let alone the camera. haha, obviously i'm focusing the negative to get a laugh but, i do feel like when they say, "pay lots, cry once. pay little, cry twice" doesn't apply to sony. and thank god for dan and cd but your math is near sighted. that 4k route is over 6gs not 2.

Nonsense. Vast majority of people bought it as upgrade to FS100 and for high frame rates. Put your camera on ebay if you aren't happy.

Well, there we go. Sony never promised 10-bit HD. All they ever said was 4K RAW (and even there they never mentioned anything about high frame rates in 2K RAW). And they never said the "upgrade" would be free. How many thousand dollars did they charge for F3 S-log upgrade? Yeah, far more ...

As I said, put your camera on ebay if you are not happy. You don't have any legal case.
