Sending the fs700 to sony for upgrade

If i were you, in the face of overwhelming contrary evidence, i'd double check that price and timescale. You may have found someone who wasn't 100% sure what you were asking for. Perhaps you're going to get an older software firmware update (not the 4K hardware/software one)? Do let us know...

cheers
Paul

Paul....
I agree. Before I send my camera off, I'll confirm which version Sony is telling me they will perform. Something seems inconsistent with this update information.

one should hope that it's not just for performing the FW update regarding the power zoom lens compatibility - paying for that would be awful...

Here is my official answer from Sony regarding Europe.
The upgrade is available in July. If u buy the HXR-IFR5 u gonna pay nothing for the Hardware Upgrade when u have Sony Prime Support. Otherwise its 500€. Upgrades for europe can only be done in France and England but Sony is arranging the transport and all.

I just received an email from the Sony Los Angeles Service Center. The latest firmware version they're aware of is for v2.0. It would seem someone at Sony Service is confused about which firmware upgrade is currently available. This is definitely a good reason to NOT be mailing your camera around the country.:undecided

When I called, they said it was about a 5 business day turn around for the upgrade.
im wondering who you talked to. i just got off the phone with sony and they said the upgrade is not available yet. i did think it odd that this would surface here and not via a sony site or press release. from what they said the cost in unknown, the exact specifics on other new features where unknown and they did not know how long it would take to perform the 4k upgrade... did you forget to ask if it was specifically for "4k" or do you have an inside connection? ... haha, if the later can i drop your name and get the same deal?

I just got off the phone with Sony and first called the number at the beginning of this post, and they re-directed me to this number: 1-800-883-6817 Press 2, then 5, then 2

This took me to someone in Sony named Mike, who wasn't really talkative or interested in helping me, but he basically said that the firmware update isn't available and is scheduled for July.

I just been in Teaneck, NJ, and they DO NOT HAVE firmware and the rest for 4K RAW update !!! so.. DO NOT SEND YOUR FS-700 to Sony Service Center in TEANECK, NJ ( and probably to any other addresses ! )

They gonna call me in about 2 weeks.... Cost ( LABOR ONLY ) is $135/hour, and it will take about 2 hours or work, so total cost for this update will be $270

Sure glad we got you to keep things straight. Just one small request? Why do you have to shout?

This is the email response I got from Sony EU (under the subject line "FS700 4K upgrade")

The £500 is fine (although I thought the cost of the upgrade was $300 USD, which is considerably less than £500!) but I'll not be able to send it to you for a couple more weeks - or possibly the end of July. Is there a back log on this process or can you turn it around reasonably quickly?

{Sony SOS helpdesk}

Hi Colin

There is no back log and process should be straight forward,
Please contact as again if you wish to start the process

Thanks

Maybe we're paying twice as much to get it quicker.... Or the japanese just like us Europeans better after all that hoo-ha in the South Pacific.

I got an (unsolicited - probably obtained from my warranty card) email this afternoon from Sony Business titled "Sony NEX-FS700 now with 2K and 4K RAW recording options!". What is interesting is that there isn't the slightest HINT in this message that a send-in-for-service hardware upgrade is required. The only way you would know this is if you are an avid follower of these, and/or other forums.

I think you can see the contents of the email here:
http://streamlinegraphics.com/NEX_FS700_eblast/NEX_FS700_online.html

And if you follow the little link in the bottom left corner & click on FS700 after arriving at the Sony site:
http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/show-highend/resource.solutions.bbsccms-assets-show-highend-FS700.shtml

Then do a lot of careful reading of the fine print, you eventually see that "(RAW output requires a camera firmware upgrade, free with the purchase of the HXR-IFR5.)"

Sony is really down-playing and obfuscating this whole hardware upgrade thing, in my opinion. I guess that's their prerogative, but it sure feels a little greasy & underhanded that they are not being more open about the whole process.

Did you stop to think that a new camera probably doesn't need a firmware upgrade?
So many people trying to play "gotcha" with Sony.

Uhhh... yes they do still need the hardware upgrade... don't spread mis-information. The dealers I've spoken to both indicated they have no information on when factory upgraded units will be available, but as soon as they are, they will change their web pages to indicate so.

Anyone in Australia heard anything about sending in your FS700 to Sony's work shop for the Firmware update?
