Semester Abroad (w/ HVX ?)

Hey everyone! Long time reader...first time poster...you know the deal...

Anyway - I'm a film student in NY and bought my HVX back in May and have been producing, DPing, directing shorts with it for the last couple of months. I love it like a child at this point. So...

I'm doing a semester abroad in Florence, taking all general studies courses. But of course I'm finding the idea of not filming anything with my HVX while in beutiful Tuscany a difficult one to accept. I kind of know it's probably not the best idea in the world for safety reasons, but I was just wondering what anyone on the board had to say about it.

Is there any sort of special insurance I can file for it while I'm abroad? Anything to considder in terms of traveling/transporting it? (has anyone tried something like fedex?) I was also playing around with the idea of possibly seeing if a bank would let me keep it in some sort of large safety deposit box or safe (I will be in some form of a dormitory-style housing situation...)

Any advice or other things I should be thinking about? Thanks in advance!

Florence huh? NYU by any chance? anyways...

TAKE THE CAMERA WITH YOU. while youre in florence, go to a place called Volterra... its the most beautiful place on this planet. Do what you must to take the CAmera. im so sorry i dint lug my DVXou there. i only had a small 1 chip sony.

PLEASE take the camera......

...I don't see how you CAN'T take the thing with you...too much of an opportunity....buy some kind of damn vault/footloocker thingie...or chain it to your leg when you sleep.....SUMTHIN!...

I'd say to also get an extremely comfortable backpack and carry the camera with you to every place you possibly can. Petty theft is a huge deal in dorms and as an American you can be a pretty easy mark.. and with that expensive camera.. bingo..

I do think being able to store it in an official locked and controlled location is a good idea as well. If y ou get a backpack like mine.. theres room for a ton of stuff and also your laptop..

Yes, NYU... did/do you go you go, too?

Yeah, I'm really starting to realize there's not really much of an option to not bring it. So I guess I really have to figure out insurance and how to get the thing there... also, what backpack are you talking about, Justyn? Must be pretty big - do you think it would attact too much attention? Thanks for the input everyone...

Dont worry about thieves in italy, if youre a real NYer, you will be savvy enough to see trouble coming. just dont take it out in seedy areas, atnight while drunk, and show it to the guy who is sharpening his knife in the alley... ya know? Italians were THE coolest people you will ever meet. ( not tomention in Rome and florence some of the most beautiful.....)

and yes i went to NYU. :)

I got the lowelpro backpack. Not really very big at all.. but deep and fits just about everything. The reason I like it the most is that it looks like a hiking backpack and oversees you'll look like a hostel backpacker.. and not a dude walking around with 10k worth of electronics. They have a version that even has wheels too.

I agree wholeheartedly about not taking it out when you go drinking... lol

So would I.

But thats the nice thing about the HVX200 - its could go either way. Especially if you are in a dorm room, it is just not safe. Florence is packed with students. I would secure a secure location for it before going there or take a cheap small camera.

Its great fun in Florence. You may want to soak up everything it has to offer then PLAN a return trip with the camera, accessories, etc. Write down ALL of your notes. Return next summer and film a flick like 'Summer Lovers' with your HVX200. !

Enjoy your good times in Florence. .
