Selling my HVX...but is this guy trying 2 scam me?

i posted my hvx200 on craigslist, i didn't have time to post a photo because i was rushing that day, i even noted that there was a small defect with the cam.

i got a response asking if my listing price was final and if i had more than one to sell? i mentioned the price was final and i only had one to sell. i said "cash only" in case it was one of those automated spam things where they try to pay with those fake money orders.

the guy's next reply was this:
I am okay with the price and condition of the item but i can only make
the payment via paypal or bank transfer as i am presently out of state
so get back to me if you are okay with that..and also you will have to
ship the item out internationally after receiving payment today thanks
and God bless.

this SOUNDS legit, however i was a little surprised somebody would be willing to make a purchase without seeing an authentic photo of the item, or proof of how many hours that was on it (i listed there's only about 200 hours) but maybe that's just me?

so does this look like one of the many scams out there? is there anyway to get screwed by someone paying you through paypal? if he lives out of state why would i have to ship it internationally & does that even matter?

Sounds like a scam to me. Craiglist if overwhelmed with that stuff. Recently tried to sell some stuff on their and got way more scam related inquires that actual legit ones. If they're just trying to close the deal without any specific questions about what they're buying, it's usually a sign they have no idea what it actually is. Just that the transaction could potentially net them some cash. I've heard of people using either fake or someone elses paypal accounts too. Have a look at this example ......

"I'm presently of out of state ..... but ship internationally"

Seems kinda fishy. Just my two cents. Be careful.

Shipping internationally is always a red flag and is a scam. He will probably send a fake email that looks like genuine paypal email saying that you recived a payment. If you log into your account you will see there was no payment. The email may even appear to come fro paypal .com but its a fake. His goal is to try and get you to ship the camera while you think you have been payed and when you find out there was no payment its to late. International means our police wont prosecute him. Paypal offers limited security, but not against a fake email that never came from them. I am 99.999% sure this is a scam, but to be sure, log into your paypal account to confirm payment and do not trust any emails. Soemitmes the emails will say "ship it now, i made the payment but you wont see it in you account because paypal is delaying it." Paypal is almost instant and you should not ship until it shows in your account. Also to log in go to paypal.com. dont click a linkin the paypal email.

this IS a scam. without doubt.

i have been selling a lot of furniture and gear on ebay in the last couple years and this is THE biggest scam on craigslist right now. and its primarily done on bigger ticket items.
basically what happens is they send you fake funds. and by the time you, or your bank figure it out. its too late. and there is the other one where they "accidentally" pay you too much. then ask you to refund the balance. and the same thing applies. by the time you figure out their money was fake. youve already sent them REAL funds from your account

the original concept behind craigslist was it was free LOCAL classifieds. the first RED FLAG these days is somebody contacting you from outside of your area.

not that by definition a guy contacting you from out of state is a scam. but if hes legit, he'll usually start by acknowledging that he's not local and asking you real questions about your gear or your willingness to ship rather than meet for exchange

another craigslist RED FLAG is when a buyer references "the item" and not mentioning what it actually is.

yea makes sense....these dudes seem to put a different spin on things everytime i turn around. the guy's name is "Deniro Slice" hahaha...right off the bat i rolled my eyes like okay, here we go.

Definitely a scam, Same scenario with the same wording I received not only one, but few scam artists on craigslist.

yea i just got another one from a "Dr. Jennifer" saying she'd like to buy the camera for her son, but she's in Utah right now about to leave the country and her son lives in London. She offered 300 more than what i have it listed for and told me to give her my paypal link or bank account number so she can wire the money. the email looked like a template they've all been using because the word camera was put in quotations like this - (the camera) within the body of the email which was with broken english and sounded generic as hell.

I'm in the same situation, I'm selling my HPX170 and posted it on craigslist. I seriously got 10 emails from, and I'll kinda mash their situations all together,

"Hi I like the item in your post, and will be willing to pay ($400 above posted price) if you ship to my friend in West Africa (its always africa for some reason) I will pay you via paypal and look forward to your item."

They never mention what the hell they are even buying.

I live by this rule, if they dont live in the US then I dont ship, if they refuse to call or talk with you in person, its a scam. Period.

i had a guy with broken english leave a number the other day saying simply "call me i'm interested in the camera". called him and he mentions he's out of state right now....before he finished i was like "aw hell now they've graduated to making calls instead of email"....but he said he'd be in town this weekend and wanted to buy the cam, actually asked if i could go down on the price. i did. so he sounds legit. HOPEFULLY this guy is legit.....how do you guys prefer to be paid when selling stuff? just flat out cash? i guess i shouldnt be worried about counterfeit bills or is that too paranoid?

these scams got me suspicious of everybody now.

Well hell, if he is going to be in town then meet in person, only deal in cash, or you could still deal with paypal but make sure he actually pays you. Although if you can do cash, do that.

If you meet in person, bring some heat. I don't trust anybody, lol.

lol you're joking but i considered that hahaha...i guess the best way to do it is to treat it like a drug deal from scarface or miami vice...meet in public with lots of people and out in the open.

i had one of those scammers ask me to mail some gear to their relative somewhere in africa for their birthday. and i decided to have some fun with them.

i told them that i was traveling to that city on business that week and would like to deliver it to them personally.

funny, but the emails stopped at that point ; )

for in person transfers make the exchange in public. Only accept cash. Look for water marks on all bills. He will probably want to inspect it before he hands over the cash, but just make sure it a pubic enough place that people will see if he runs off with your cam. Also after getting the cash don't go home, go strait to the bank and deposit it. I heard about a guy who went home and a friend of the guy that paid followed him and mugged him for all his money back. Stay in public until you no longer have the money.

yea, see that's good info. you have to actually think like a crook when you approach these types of situations. is it easy to spot counterfeit bills? clerks in grocery stores do it all the time. hold it up to the light and what am i looking for exactly? for the watermarks to be there or for them to look funny?

yea they dont have time to deal with anybody with common sense or some world traveler, lol. i told one of them the camera actually was missing the power button too and that they would have to physically open up the camera with tools everytime they wanted to use it and turn it on....they sent another email saying "great i am glad we could make a deal...." and still was offering $400 over the listed price as if they hadn't even read the damn response. i wonder if these are people actually doing this or some kind of auto spam crap done automatically with some software or something.

lol you're joking but i considered that hahaha...

No joke, I always have some sort of piece anywhere I go with my gear. No one is gonna jack my stuff. BC you know if they stole your stuff the police aren't going to do much. Tracking serials works SOMETIMES, you probably wouldn't hear back from it for a year or two if at all.

lol ok now we're all talking like we're criminals.
