F3: Selling Cooke Varitol

It's breaking my heart but I need to sell my beloved Cooke Varitol Hobson Taylor lens. This was a revolutionary lens that cost $30,000 new when first introduced. Cooke received a lifetime achievement award from the Academy for producing this fantastic lens. Nearly half of all major motion pictures were shot on this lens and for good reason. When my AC pulls out this lens we say "Let the magic begin."

Leading ladies just love the lens. It warms skin tones and in the color range of skin tones it seems to hide small blemishes, wrinkles and pores while leaving other colors sharp. Perfect for romance, comedy, light drama and family fare.

No I have not become infatuated with other sexy lenses. Simply a finances issue I'm sorry to say. I'm also going to sell off 3 Zeiss PL lenses and some Nikon lenses. I was getting glass heavy and unlike you I don't have an F55.

I heard this is not good for 5K because of vignetting? is it true? How about 4K?
That would depend on the size of the sensor, not the number of pixels in the frame.

According to Cooke, the 18-100 T3.0 will cover any and all Super35 frame formats. It covers a 28.1mm diameter image circle.

If you're talking about Red Epic 5K, this thread seems to come to the conclusion that the Epic 5K 5120-pixel-wide frame has a diagonal image size of as much as 31.26mm, so no, the Cookes (nor likely many other cinema lenses) will not cover that.

thanks!

As Barry pointed out the Epic sensor is bigger and very few film cinema lenses will work on it because they were all designed for S35 film.

The Cooke and virtually all film cinema lenses are just fine with 4k. Some film stocks are actually above 4k in resolution and S35 sensors match pretty closely to S35 film size. In short, this Cooke was designed exactly for 4k Red, F3, F5, F55 type applications. It even helps get rid of that video look I often see on certain cameras including the Red.
