Selling 7d, should I get a GH1

They are not 'the same'. They both look very different and both have different strengths and weaknesses. It's up to the shooter to decide what he wants to deal with and what he doesn't, and more importantly, which of the two 'looks' he likes more.

If by the same, you mean that they are both very capable of being used to create greate quality, then yes, that is true. One doesn't 'beat' the other all out. As all of us who are trying to decide on buying one, we would love to hear "THIS CAMERA IS BETTER ON ALL ACCOUNTS" because it would make our decision easier but that just isn't the case with these two cameras for now. It's style and workaround decision more than a 'which is the best' decision.

so has panasonic put out a date for the gh2?

No. And there's been no announcement of a "GH2" or whatever the next version will be called.

Probably the earliest Panasonic will let out any info about the next version of the GH1 is at CES in Las Vegas in a few days, but that's just a guess on my part; they may or may not announce/leak any info at CES:

There's also the big PMA 2010 International Convention and Trade Show, Feb. 21-23, 2010, at the Anaheim Convention Center in So. CA. And also NAB in LV in April. And various international events throughout the year.

So, really, Panasonic could announce something at any semi-random time.

If you need a "video" cam today, buy or rent one today. Otherwise wait. Same as always.

yeah, i bought the 7d bc i had to shoot my thesis film. i love it... i love the images... and i love the low light but honestly as a student and with a baby on the way i can't justify having a $2200 piece of equipment lying around... at this point i am just not staying busy enough shooting weddings/docs, etc to justify it... would love to have one though... anyway, thanks for the help guys

you could get the gh1 for $1280 on amazon and then sell the kit lens on ebay for around $700. or you could get the pentax k-x for $500 with $50 off with the 8% bing cashback (you had mentioned the cashback in the o!play thread). I know you had been considering it because I saw you posting in the kx thread on the new guys forum. it's not as fully featured as the 7d or gh1 but really the main thing I'd like on it is the 60p for slow-motion. it's great in low light (and actually has a slightly larger sensor than the 7d ha) and good for the price (it beats out the current entry HDSLRs in its class imho, e.g. the t1i or the d5000). ISO and shutter control would be nice but aren't a huge dealbreaker for me with ae-lock (my untrained eye can't really notice these things unless ISO gets super grainy or whatever and the only thing that usually bothers me are those exposure changes you sometimes see when it's not locked). aliasing doesn't seem that bad, at least compared to other HDSLRs.
