Sell HPX and get the Canon 7D?

Hey everyone, I have an HPX170 with a Letus 35 Elite, Nikon Mount, and two P2 Cards... I was thinking about selling that set up in order to get the Canon 7D and some Zeiss lenses, what do you think? What would be a good price to sell my current HPX/Letus set up? Is it possible to get a 72mm Zeiss mount for the HPX?

THNX!

I would keep the 170 and then buy a 7D also. There a lot of things that the HPX does better and a few that the 7D does better as well.

Depth of field is better with 7D, lens quality and detail is fantastic but the P2 camera has better colors by far. I use them both together

your current rig may be big and cumbersome but it has none of the limitations of an slr. You have ccd's so you can actually move the camera. It records to a real codec. You can remove the dof rig and have a full range video lens. You have a professional rig that you can make some money with. Make some money to pay off your investment and buy the 7D or t2i as well. If you really want some ziess glass, you can get nikon mount now and use them with canon adapters later. I wouldn't buy the canon mount versions as they lack iris rings like all canon lenses, so can only be used on canon. Nikon can be used on RED and even some modified 35mm movie cams.

another vote for NOT selling the 170 for a 7D. they are different tools for different situations.

and to my knowledge, NO there is no direct 72mm zeiss mount for the hpx. thats what your letus is for.

thanks a lot for all the feedback, really appreciate it. Looks like I am going to stick with the 170, hopefully in the future i can get the 7d for that depth of field, lens quality and detail.

There are several places u can rent dslrs and all variety of lenses and support as needed...
Unless you need the dslr features on a daily or at least weekly basis. It's probably wise to just rent until it's no longer a financial hit to buy...

My suggestion: Along the lines of the others....sell the Letus Elite and Nikon adaptor and use that $ to fund your 7d purchase.

Agreed with others, your 170 is your primary weapon...though the 7d makes a helluva side-arm, and can most likely fill ANY void left with ridding yourself of the 35mm adaptor for the 170.

Everywhere I shoot now, BOTH systems go with me. Either my 200a or EX1, and the 5d2/7d kit. In almost every situation, I find the positives for both. Just shot a Monday Night football spot for a local bar...a 30 second TV spot using both the 5d and 200a. It was surprisingly easy to grade the coloring and match up the two cams.

They go together...but your first cam will always be your 170...IMHO.

Good Luck...the 7d is a friggin blast!

Feel like a parrot on repeat.

Panasonic AF100 out in the next few months (no speculating) will fill both roles.

Depends on autofocus.

Im not sure how. None of the cameras used by news crews etc where things happen possibly the fastest have auto focus. Manual focus takes control and the ability to work it very quickly. And it delivers a consistent accurate result. I dont think auto focus should be a consideration.

Autofocus on the AF100 depends on the lens. The 14-140 does pretty well, but I think it's the only m43 lens rated for video autofocus. Others will autofocus, but they're noisy and slow in comparison to the 14-140.

Point being, if you need autofocus, you can get it.

Source for this?
Well, it's pretty obvious -- news has traditionally been shot on 2/3" or 1/2" shoulder-mount rigs that had manual-focus lenses. Even the 1/3" HPX300 that's the backbone for NBC news, is manual-focus only.

Granted there are more handycams present now, and they all offer autofocus, but the image of a "news camera" has always been the betacam or dvcpro shoulder-mount rig.

Not likely to be listed on the job offering, no. But if you just so happen to be the only guy in town who gets footage of a particular plane crash or bomb going off or a horse walking a tightrope bridge, and you got that footage on a Flip, you better believe they'll air it.

I just shot with the 550D/T2i and I would like to get some car mount shots, jib and other shots with the HVX or HPX.

- I assume the best way to match the 2 footage from both cams, do I shoot with the HVX or HPX at 1080/24p, since the T2i is 1080/24p? I've always rented and shot with the HVX at 720/24pn, so I don't know if there is a 1080/24pn option.

- And, to best match w/ the HVX/HPX footage, do I shoot w/ a 35mm adaptor w/ prime lenses to match w/ the T2i footage? Because we used primes.

- Also, I had to transcode the H.264 T2I footage to Apple ProRes to cut in FCP, but if I mix it with HVX/HPX footage, do I transcode it to DVCPRO???

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Frankly, I would rather shoot 720 24pn on the HVX/HPX and then down-rez the T2i footage to 720 as its actual resolvable resolution is more 720 than 1080 anyway.
