selecting 24p, 30p, 30i, and 60i

Hey, i was doing some test on a dvx100a adjusting the shutter speed and progessive/interlaced.

could someone explain the proper way to select between the 4 shooting options shown above.

i found the scene setting to choose between 30p, 24p, and 24p(adv) but if any of those are selected, what should the shutter speed be on?

if the progressive is turned off, does it default to interlaced?

why are some of the frame rates in decimal format... 24.3 for example.

in the end, ide like to shoot a movie in 24p, but use 30p for slow motion at 20% and 60i for extreme slow motion.

thanks

if nothing is selected it does default to 60i. just do the math, most 24p movies are shot with 1/50 shutter speed, so if your shooting 30p and you want it to look 1/50 the speed I would shoot around 1/90 that being the closest setting to look 1/50. Then for 60i slowmotion since your slowing it by 50% shoot with a 1/100 shutter speed.

so you're saying that if i shoot in 30p, and i use a 1/90 shutter speed, then when i import into the computer, the footage will already be slow motion?

no im saying when you shoot in 60i and 1/90 shutter speed and slow it down by 50% to get a smooth slow motion you will ge 30p and 1/45 shutter speed its simple math.

The DVX has four shooting modes 3 of which are progressive, the only interlaced option is 60i.

That depends on the look you are after... for general shooting in 24p or 24pa 1/48th is the best option.

Yes it defaults to 60i.

Where? Maybe your thinking syncro scan with shutter speed?

Good choice.... however I would shoot 24pa to edit on a 24p timeline - shutter speeds for the slow motion are best set at the following: 30p - 1/60th slow down to 80% ...... 60i - 1/120th to 40%.
