F5: Seen at Cinegear

What's the right angled viewfinder plug got on the other end? I was really hoping for a plug/socket combo as the LCD viewfinder cable is hard wired in. :(

Are the new post LUTs available for download yet? I'll be starting a grade on an F55 music video later this afternoon, would be keen to get my hands on the new LUTs if they're available (can't find anything on Sony's site).

Nate, a bit off topic but I don't suppose you've heard any rumours at Cinegear from about the possibility of Canon releasing their Cine Primes in a PL Mount?
I'm wrestling with the possibility of picking up a set of Cine Primes or the 15.5-47 Zoom to compliment the 30-105. I'm not keen on spending that kind of cash on a set of EF mount lenses, but in reality the wide zoom will only do a fraction of the work of the 30-105.

I'm wrestling with a 30-105 purchase. I did not engage in any convo about the Canon primes there. They're a tough sell at Cinegear, being in Los Angeles where preferences run to other lenses.

Frankly, in the word of primes, there's not much to recommend the Canon primes when you can get equivalent or better for the same price, and with interchangeable mounts thrown in. Compact Primes and the upcoming Schneiders come to mind first.

The new Schneider Xenon full frame primes will be interchangeable, and like $3500ish a piece.

How do you like the 30-105? I might get a chance to try one for a week, might be the one for me.

It was just the plug I was given, there was nothing there.

I'm guessing they might do an in-service-center mod for LCD EVF owners?

I didn't think of asking, it just didn't come to mind in my short time of talking with Juan.

HI Nate

I have not shot with the Canon 30-105. I would certainly say test it-- and let us all know your impressions.

My guess is that the mod will require a service-center trip. I'll track that one down. Likewise, there is a fix in the works for the AXS-5 fan noise and suspect that might be a hardware mod as well. I'll see what I can find out.

Hi Nate, I've only had the 30-105 a couple of days. So far it looks to be a really clean lens. Virtually nil focus breathing, and a very useable zoom range, you could pretty much shoot a drama or a doco with this one lense. As I said, it'll be the lense that stays on the camera 90% of the time. I picked up the 14.5 to 47 today, very similar impressions. It's pretty straight out to about 20mm then you start to see a little bit (of acceptable) bowing.

I'm really hanging out for the Canon primes to come out in a PL mount (i hope someone from Canon reads this board). I know alot of people will turn their nose up at Canon compared to some traditional Cine glass builders, but really at T 1.5 or even 1.3 these are pretty exceptional lenses for the money. I'd like to have a matching set of glass zooms and primes, but I'm not going to buy EF mount lenses.

My Camera has just gone out on a hire for a few days. I'll try and post some pics from the new glass when I get a chance to shoot them.

BTW I had a set of the Sony primes on loan for a while, and once again for the money, a very impressive set of primes, a pity they'll get no respect because of the four letters on the side!

I saw the EVF connector and was remarkably disappointed that the cable exits toward the lens. This ensures that the stiff, double shielded cable will be in the way of lens operations and accessories. The slightly angled-up version seems better. The weak element is the connector itself, it is weak regardless of how it is angled.

Here is some of the stuff I liked. A little biased? Maybe.....

The super quick accessory system for the F55, integrated power distro, EVF support, EVF cable protection.

Not sure you would want the EVF mounted like this, but you can. Keeps a clean eyeline for the operator.

Kind of buried in this pic is the ScatterBOX. It is a power distribution box that has 12v and 24v outs, dual-inputs for hot swap battery operation, active fuses, automatic on/off with camera switch, start/stop trigger. 2-P-taps, 3-2pin lemo 12v, 1 24v 3pin Fischer.

Yes, the 4pin XLR connector retracts into the housing to keep it out of the way of other connectors.
