Seems like everybody's run off....

Is it just me or has the excitement and testing diminished lately on the GH13 Miracle?

We're all too busy shooting footage of dogs and farmers markets.

What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be out shooting too? :D

More fun to be out shooting then to test. I think people are still around, but the shooting is definitely more fun.

Yeah, i'm sick of shooting charts and spikey trees .... Time to test the GH13 on some beach and on-water scenes.

Didn't shoot a single chart or a tree. What for?
So that one variable (scene) could be removed from complex equation of testing different settings without much understanding as to what's really going on. How did you arrive at your "optimal" settings? If by reading reports of others, chances are they shot the chart ;)

I agree the charts were a must to understand codec behavior and set benchmarks, i just find the need now to also explore how it handles real world scenes as well.

I can see Pappas chart burnt on my retina hours after experiments have concluded, it's like the '60s all over again without the smoke....hahaha

I just shot 110 clips at a rehab center (promotional video) out in the woods for another production company that heard I had the GH1, they only had DV cameras. Outdoor and indoor shots using 720 60p C settings since I was going to be doing a lot of panning of the grounds using 1/125 shutter for slomo later. Used the kit lens for all the outdoor shots, worked great. Used the Indislider on the putting green, guy sank the putt twice, and did a couple lens flare shots in the woods that came out nice in the early morning sunlight.

I only had one write error the whole day (5 hours in 90+ degree heat and sun plus humidity that fogged the lenses up a couple times going from indoors to outdoors) which was an outdoor shot of the trees/landscape. I did run into a very slow and faint horizontal bar rolling up from florescent light even though my shutter was a 1/60 in one of the rooms. It was only noticeable when I quickly scrolled through that shot in the timeline afterwards.

I didn't use additional lighting for any of the interior shots and didn't have any FPN or banding problems. Most rooms had plenty of daylight coming in to work with. Mostly shot at 320, 640 and a couple at 1250 ISO. Outdoors was at 100 ISO.

Couple comments by people about how small the GH1 was throughout the day, I quickly listed off all the great things about it and you're not one of the cool kids if you are not shooting with one. I did have a 20" Sony video monitor setup with a Panasonic Blu-Ray player that has an SD slot for playback of the GH1 MTS files for client review. Lots of gasps about how great the image quality was.

Screen Grab below using VLC Player. Seems to introduce artifacts, especially my outdoor shots with trees. Is there a higher quality/better way to show still frames from GH1 video?

honestly I've been busy shooting every single day I absolutely love the quality and can't get enough of it every day when I wake up I pick up the camera and start doing more tests and shooting around. But I really do wish i could see a short or feature or anything shot on a HACKED gh1 recently. all there is out there in terms of shorts especially on dvx is old pre hack gh1. I have found nothing with a hacked gh1 that anyone has shot in terms of a narrative film like a short, not just nature crap etc...

I got a music video shoot comin up in two weeks that I'll be running two hacked GH1's on... and I will be posting it here for sure!

I chose one setting because I knew that was the closest on the higher side to the 24mbits AVCHD is meant to run maximum at. Logic says that if you go much much higher than those 24mbits you are going to run into trouble as many have. I haven't run into trouble so far. So there you go. Out of logic I chose the B settings at 24PN and VOILA I am shooting beautiful footage without shooting a single chart!

I have also been sticking with just the B settings. playback and stability is higher on my priority list than bitrate. I have yet to confirm but I'm not sure if that extra upped bitrate equates to proportional image quality gains. I think theres a point where it just flattens out when you reach a certain bitrate so your taxing the camera more than you should, but thats just my crazy theory.

Certainly a lot of the mystery, confusion, excitement, and hype that initially fueled all the discussion has died down. Everyone has just settled in to using the settings that everyone was working so hard to find.

Now if we could just the level brought down on the mic input without using an attenuator...

i find it more difficult to keep up to date on whats happening now as its spread out over many threads , unlike being glued all day to one thread where almost every few hours epic awesomeness was discovered :) .. i JUST bought a GH1 yesterday from the store i work at after getting the one off display as the new boxed one was a V1.3.... so i hope the momentum dosn't stop ( in uk paid £690 , after cashback comes through )

Cave what are you using VLC on? Windows or Mac? If you are on Windows.. Win 7's media player plays back avchd footage natively and beautifully without any artifacts whatsoever.

VLC always gave me problems too... and I still don't comprehend how macs cannot play back avchd footage without a hassle.... another reason I am glad I stayed with Win 7. All of the crazy 'mac' is the best video editing machine and it won't play back a avchd file... still...

My mac laptop sits in the corner gathering dust except for the occasional time I am FORCED to use final cut.
