FS5: Seeing Different Zebras with FS5 LCD vs Atomos Shogun

Hey folks,

I'm using a Sony FS5 with an Atomos Shogun. The FS5 is outputting via SDI RAW signal and then recording Prores HQ on the Atomos Shogun. I'm trying to setup my exposure settings. I'm using a Canon 24-105mm lens with it set at f4.0. I'm set on Profile 7 shooting SLOG2 and my FS5 zebras set to 70%. Then I also have my Atomos Shogun zebras set to 70%.

The problem is that there's a huge difference between the FS5 LCD Zebras and my Atomos Zebras. I have to change my Atomos Zebra setting to 100% to come somewhat close to what my FS5 is showing.

Any ideas?

Just spit-balling...check zebra 2 on the FS5 and set it to 100% and crosscheck with the Atomos. I think that's what the Atomos is probably seeing.

As I understand (and use) them, zebra 1 set to 70% will expose for skin tones, and zebra 2 set to 100% will show loss of detail (total white) at 100% (broadcast safe). Can't monitor both simultaneously on the FS5, but you MIGHT be able to monitor zebra 1 on the camera, and zebra 2 on the Atomos at the same time.

Are you monitoring on/in-camera with a LUT? If you are and the Atomos is seeing a RAW or LOG/un-LUTed image, that's your difference. The zebras are going to respond to the actual image, so if an image is LUTed/REC 709, etc., zebras set at 70% are going to react to what is 70% on that image, but if it's a LOG image, they're going to react to what is 70% on that image. Make sense?
