"Swallow Your Fears" by rockers State of Man, directed by Xandy Smith, produced by Adam Bush. Shot completely on an HVX200 with a PS Technik 35mm adapter and a set of Zeiss speedprimes. We also used follow focus and a matte box. For camera support we used a super pee wee dolly, an EZ FX jib, and good ol' fashioned hand held. We had a robust lighting package, we lit it as though we were shooting film.

We also shot a behind the scenes documentary of this music video shoot using a DVX100. That will be ready to view sometime next week.

Very Nice. Having never been on a crew for a music of this quality, I have a couple of questions. Did you use more than one HVX? For the live performances, how many takes, typically, per set up?

Workflow was smooth, we had 3 P2 cards, an Apple 17" Powerbook on-site and an external firewire drive for storage. We shot all the storyline scenes this past Saturday and the performance scenes this past Sunday. We only had one (1) HVX200 to use. We planned and set up each shot in advance, director Xandy Smith painstakingly drew over 50 storyboard panels and a detailed shot list.

We had the band rehearse their performance by playing the song 40 times in a row back to back. They videotaped the performances, watched the playback, then came back the next rehearsal day and did it again. They got it downpat so we never had any extra takes due to their flubs, they were flawless. We shot a couple takes of every shot and angle and typically got one safety. Our jib op was green and the 1st AC almost choked him. But we got all of our shots and we wrapped both days perfectly on time. Our 1st AD prepared and executed a very detailed, flawless schedule. We tried to treat the band like rock stars and we shot the music video the smae way we do 35mm music videos with $250K budgets. The budget for this job was embarrassingly low (way less than $30K) but we are pleased with the outcome. The band just saw it today and they are thrilled.

The folks at Panasonic corporate in NJ seemed way interested in this shoot and they had someone out to see us "make the donuts".
 
Adam, you rock man. :thumbsup: Reminder of how good pre-production has allowed you to do so much in a short amount of on set time, and with 1 cam and 3 P2 cards, wow.

A few questions, if I may:

1. Lens adaptor used, if so, any info you can disclose?
2. Did you use any particular filters?
3. Did you take the footage to an uncompressed 10bit 1080p24 timeline and CC this? Any relevant info?

HD master must look great. I would like to see a few HD frames, if you are able to post them. Nice locked off cam shots and dissolve/luminance style layer pass fx, very effective.

First I must say that it was the vision of Xandy Smith coupled with his great directing skils including directing the actors (just regular people), the tight pre-planning including the shot list and storyboards that really deserves the credit for the results.

The lens adapter we used is the Mini35 from P+S Technik

We used no filters in actual production, we shot clean. We did use a few filters in post, all of which came from 55mm from Digital Film Tools.

Did your 1st AC pull focus from the camera the entire time? How did he do it on the JIB?

How was your workflow? from handing the full P2 card to the assistant, and him handing it back after he's done.. what did he do?

Yes, our 1st AC pulled focus the entire time, even when we had handheld shots. We had a remote focus rig for the jib shots. Workflow was quite simple, we barely noticede when the 1st AC switched P2 cards. We did have a 17" Apple Powerbook near the camera at all times to facilitate easy dumps.

Really well done.

I would play with color looks in post a bit more, the hvx gives room for lots of collor correct, not to crazy about the band on stage's look, a bit drab color correct, but that 's my taste.

budget around $15k?
