Second Hand Smoke

haha Steve, that seems to have been the concensus. I added in an engine sound and was hoping that the overexposed windows would help not give away the fact the car wasn't moving. I really wish I had had time to plan that better.

Anyway I like the style of this film, a bit Tarantino maybe, in imagery not scripting.
That's awesome to hear, he's one of my favorite filmmakers. If you have time, I'd like you to go into more detail about that, I'd love to know what exactly reminded you of his work.

I'm so glad you noticed the end sign. So far, only one other person I think has mentioned noticing it to me.

I can't explain it actually. It's the image look you had and the bump who was dirty like in real life. You know shots didn't had that dream look. It looked raw.

hello there. this is to both you and the director

this is the only film i feel i need to review and the only one i have. your film was my favorite in the fest, for a few reasons.

the acting:

some people think your dad's acting was bad. i think it was perfect. it made him a believable character. i have spoken to a few bums and that's how they sound. they're flawed they trail off, there is a reason they're bums. maybe this is an insult to your dad.... but it was good.

the driver was even better. i think he pulled off the accents and nuances of tone in the script perfectly. i don't know if he wants to be a pro but in my opinion he's better than allot of others who want to be. he also directs well and writes well. but more on that later.

the style/genre:

i love this style. i really don't know where to put it, but i'd say it's similar in style to pulp fiction and reservoir dogs. that kind of black comedy gritty american movie. also the black and white scene change reminded me of kill bill. so i guess i'm putting you in the same league as the greatest man alive :)

*** i read after i wrote this that someone else caught the Tarantino vibe. :) ***

the music and sound:

the music was great. it suited it perfectly. cut out at the right moments, everything.
the audio could have used a little cleaning up in editing for that really polished feel. like the black before the hospital scene - i think it was mentioned before.
but over all it was really good.

the script/directing:

the right amount of dialogue and creepiness to suggest things! the ending was a little bit of a cop-out but still good. i find it really hard to have good sounding dialogue and this was all good. i envy you. the story was was good. it's been the most complete one i've seen so far. the others either had too little or too much or it was just a bad idea. i really liked this though

the editing/camera work:

the cuts in-between the actors lines to the same angle were a cool idea. it gives it a style and makes it interesting. i think this almost makes the film. that and the quick little camera movements and cuts to little things. the pacing of the editing made this movie what it is. it made it visually interesting in an other wise potentially boring car scene. good framing and shots.

the car:

i didn't know they where moving. but if you had green screen it would have looked too fake and it's impossible to film while they're moving in reality. straight away i realized and it's a non point. i don't think it makes it bad. the driver was never looking at the road. i think it makes the film more funny this way.

i think if you didn't have the ending this could be apart of a much bigger film. like feature. it's really just one scene. if you re-did everything with the knowledge you've gained from this thread and making it, you could have a really nice movie.

i am applying for film school as-well. i have worked on about 9 shorts, 4 of them my own. none are up to this standard though. i hope you get in. i hope i get in. i could see you and your friend making some awesome films in the future. if this is your second film.. i watched your noir one a while back, you have improved soooo much. i'd love to see some of the 10 min you shot for your feature or read the script. if you don't mind :)

once i get out of this hell hole and make some films, i hope we can work together some day. watch my film, it's not really representative of my ability but i like it :)

Wow! I feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Thanks!

Which school? And how old are you? I'm PM-ing you a link to a thread with some of the clips I rendered out.

Thanks so much for such a detailed review. :D

I'm downloading the footage now. I'm 18. i took a year off after high-school and now I'm applying for a few schools. one is the most prestigious in the state (possibly in the country) it's called the VCA (Victorian College of the Arts) and the others are a few interesting ones RMIT, Swinburne, FCC. I'm in Australia, Melbourne, so i doubt you've ever heard of them :)

How about yourself?

Sorry for taking so long to respond, I was in the ER until 4:00 AM this morning and then I had to catch a film festival in the morning and I've had an eyepatch covering my right eye until just two hours ago.

Anyways, I going to apply to Chapman University, I've heard tons of great things about it. They're one of the schools that give put a camera in your hands the first day, which is very much my learning style. :D

what did you do, stab yourself in the eye with a pencil?
yeah I'm the same. I learn practically. the VCA course is more theory than the others but more prestigious, so if i get into that i'll do it. but i think i'd be just as happy to do the others. did that make any sense?
you guys over there in America land have different school end times don't you?
i find out in a month whether or not i get in. :undecided:

Your dad has screen presence. He reminds me of Eli Wallach in The Good The Bad and The Ugly. He did look like he was reading his lines off a note in his hand a few times, though.

jenningsp: Nah, I was at a friend's house and we were having a bonfire and a small ember flew up into my eye and fused to the underneath of my top eyelid so every time I moved my eye, lid closed or not, it scratched my cornea.

pmgmedia: Haha, I love that movie. I'll tell him you said that.
