Second Camera for 5D Shoots

Does anybody have advice on what camera to pair with a 5D? The last time I used a video camera, I was shooting SD. I have absolutely no experience with what's out there now, but I am investing in a second camera, and it would be nice to add flexibility. I've considered a 7D for its affordability, my gear would be mostly interchangeable, and I would have the 60fps option, but it would still have the same limitations.

I would like to find an affordable option, that will give me footage I can mix with the 5D footage without too many headaches. No tapes.

I generally rent a 7D when I need a second camera (not very often). If I was going to buy I'd just get a t2i. Video quality identical to the 7D and gives you the same 60 fps option for slo mo at 1/3 the price.

That's actually not a bad idea, I hadn't considered it. It doesn't solve continuous shooting, but for that price...I might buy 2 cameras.

The 4Ti is shipping now for $850.

I have a Canon 3Ti that I purchased at a good price. I am going to list that today at around $510 for the body, $575 for the kit with 18-55mm.

Just to give you a sense for pricing.

Personally, I am looking forward to the 4Ti auto focus and silent focus lenses.

I personally use 550 x 2 &7d with 5DMK3. the 550 both have ML, and will continuously record (albeit continued to a new file). Matching isnt a problem, as i use primes with the 550d/7d.

IQ is the SAME for 550d and 7d. 550d can be picked up 2nd hand for less than $300 and install ML for free , you have basically a non weaetherproofed 7D!! minus the AF in photo mode.

I think I might be sold on the 4Ti.

I am really looking forward to it! I'm hoping it lets me avoid needing a camcorder for a number of projects, among other things. those STM lenses look great too.

I ordered a Canon T4i from Norman camera here in Michigan today. It should be here tomorrow afternoon (Thursday.)

I plan to run it through some ISO tests for both video & photo. Someone has also requested RAW or JPEG files (not sure if we have a RAW converter yet) from a high contrast scene.

I am going to test the auto focus tracking, a near to far auto re-focus using the touch screen, etc. I will post a bit of a review here and a link to a web page with samples.

I'll start a new thread after I get the camera I am also open to requests on tests. And happy to have anyone who lives near Ann Arbor, MI test the camera with me over the next few days, or have a look at the camera.

Once the 18-135 STM IS lens ships, I want to test hand held, on a rig, and on a tripod with the special IS for hand held shots.

Also FWIW: I noticed that Adorama is including a Magic Bullets package with a T4i preorder, as well as an extra battery and a couple of other things, for an extra $50.

The battery is usually $25, so net on the Magic Bullet package is $25 or less. I'd love to buy that from anyone who plans on buying the T4i and doesn't need it (as I already have the T4i coming.) Otherwise just aheads up on that.

Cheers! Should be fun!

Michael
