F55: Second camera: A7sii -- which picture profile to use?

I have a two camera shoot coming up with my F55, and the second camera is the Sony A7sii. This DSLR has picture profiles you can customize, and I'm wondering how close I can get to the F55? Currently thinking both camera should be set to REC(709) but Slog2 and Slog3 are also options. By the way these interviews will not require HDR.

thanks,

I am about to do a shoot this week with the same cameras and would love to hear anyone's recommended presets as well. I have used the A7SII for some time, but just added the FS5. Very pleased so far. I have Film Convert and other LUT's as well for Post but just need a good profile to start as close as possible. Any ideas.

OP mentioned F55, but nonetheless, all Sonys. I would personally use S-log in all of them (maybe a specific one based on the cameras being used), but the workflow may also change if grading isn't needed and you're just handing over the files.

Sorry, I think FS5 and F55 sure looks a lot alike. :) Maybe better naming for the future. I will be grading as well. Sorry to Hijack by Dyslexia.

I have my FS7, a7RII, and a7S all matching pretty well using these profile guidelines. I would consider one of these profiles from AbelCine and adjust to your liking to match your F55. Do not shoot SLOG 2/3 on 8bit, it will fall apart quickly.

Another thought to consider is shoot SLOG3 on both cameras but make sure you rent a recorder that can take the HDMI signal out of the a7SII so you can take advantage of the 10 bit 422 codec it provides you. That way you can match them in post.

S-Log on 8-bit with light post work is fine. Heavy manipulation of an image stresses even the best codecs, but minor CC/grading is doable; you see it everyday and no one notices a difference.

Shooting without Slog allows me to white balance and control ISO. So I guess what I'm asking is what settings to use on the A7sii 's picture profile? Particularly how to set gamma and color mode? Does it make sense to shoot with the F55's gamma set rec709(800%) and A7sii gamma set to ITU 709(800%) ? If so, what color mode for the A7sii ?

thanks

Bump.

I recently did a two camera shoot - FS5 and A7S II and set both to Gamma Cine4, Matrix to Pro +1 - left everything else at default.

Client preferred the look of the A7S, and i thought it looked cleaner, even though i never went above 6db gain on the FS5. Might somehow be the look of the full frame A7S that competed so well with the FS5.

Both cameras had a Canon 24-105 lens on.

Behop, I'm shooting with a Sony F 5 5 (fifty-five) not a F S 5 ( the letter S - 5) , it's a bummer that Sony named these two cameras so that they look alike in print.

Does anyone have experience matching the F55 with the A7sii? If so, what gamma and color mode did you use?

I would shoot SLOG2 gamma and SGAMUT3.CINE gamut on the A7S2 and then SLOG3 gamma and SGAMUT3.CINE gamut on the F55. I really much prefer the colour from that gamut to anything else I´ve seen on the Sony cameras. And it grades well without heavy LUTs making it ideal for grading the A7S2 footage. Just make a LUT with a contrast curve and some saturation roll off in shadows and highlights and you have a nice natural start. If you want a more agressive look I would grade it manually from there instead of filmprint LUTs for the A7S2, because that footage will not hold up with heavy LUTs like the F55 footage will.

Overexpose both cameras around 0.5 to 1.0 stop.

Stokstad, thanks for your reply, it does make sense, but I wonder if there's a way to get the 2 cameras to match without using slog? It seems the a7s2, like the F55, cannot change its ISO or white balance in slog mode.

Hey guys, just a follow up.

I found that, if you want tto match the F55 and the A7s2 without using Slog, you can set

As72 Picture Profile so that Gamma is Cine4 and Color Mode is S-Gamut.Cine3
and
the F55's Gamma is set to HG8

I found that with very minor tweaking the two match beautifully.

cheers,

Tom
