Seagate Unveils Monster Hard Drives

Analysts say a 750-gigabyte drive could hold roughly 375 hours of standard-definition television programming, about 75 hours of high-definition video, or more than 10,000 music CDs converted to the MP3 digital audio format.

For the hard drive industry, the capacity milestone pegs the biggest, fastest jump in its 50-year history.

Story here.

Seagate is our choice for digital archiving - we use 120 and 160GB Barracuda models for each day of shooting in the P2 environment.

I've never had a Cheetah or Barracuda drive fail - ever. I'm thrilled that they've finally broken the 500GB threshold. 750GB for less than $.75 per is absolutely huge.

This is great! I just picked up a second Barracuda for my working drive and a few 750's in a RAID is looking like a nice cost-effective setup! You can get 1.5TB on two drives for $1.50/GB, whereas right now you would need three drives and a bigger enclosure (read more money) for $1.62/GB.

I'm hoping to put these drives in the AMCC.com SideCar product coming out this summer. 4 drives will yield 2.25TB of usable RAID 5 over a SATA II connection (faster than FW800). I think that will cost about $4K.

The SideCar's announcement came this past January at Macworld with a 2TB limitation. I hope this was because it only has 4 slots and nobody has a SATA drive bugger than 500GBs.

Jeex, the idea of having 1TB drives next year is mindboggling.

Here's to a 4TB SideCar (3TB usuable) next year!

Yeah, I was at MacWorld looking at the SideCar and hoping not to be disappointed when it is released. I am assuming that the 750GB drives are arriving earlier than AMCC could forecast, hence the announced limitation. I can't conceive of another reason. Still, I won't know what its limits are until it starts shipping. My whole HVX experience has been hurry up and wait. Wait for cam, wait for larger P2 or Firestore or Cineporter, or MXF meta-data handling in FCP or 1080/24p, or ... now this.
