Hello and thanks for previous post/hints. Im continuing my crash course learning the dvx200 finally got my computer up so Im prepping for storage. I'd like to download my sd cards thru the USB 3.0 port on the camera to an external back up drive. I went to the Panasonic site listed in the manual and it shows some of the Seagate drives are compatible. Im limited to only a couple here on island- Backup Plus Ultra Slim 2T is one - Anyone here use it? Thanks

"Tthe DVX200 has the ability to power and take control of an external USB hard disk (either USB 2.0 or USB 3.0), format that disk and copy the contents of its SD cards over to the hard drive, and it can also play back clips that are on the hard drive — all without needing a computer anywhere along the way. If the drive is a portable, bus-powered drive, the DVX200 can supply bus power to it. If the drive is a larger AC-powered type, you’ll need to plug that drive’s power supply in to be able to use it. The DVX200 can only power devices that are designed to be powered through a single USB port.

There are some limitations to the hard drives you can use; they can’t be smaller than 32 gigabytes, or larger than 2 terabytes. Not every drive is going to work; Panasonic recommends you go to http://pro-av.panasonic. net for more info on using external media devices." This was taken from Barry Green's free downloadable book. Suggest you download a copy if possible. It is a great book with over 250 pages of material for the DVX200. It's a life saver.

I transfer the card content using my computer and save them on an external drive. I have 3 new laptops, and one of them I carry with on every shoot. But if you are not near your computer, then you can save your clips to the hard drive without it. Which would be a smart habit to develop.

For what it's worth....I've used three different mass storage devices with the DVX200 and they all worked:

1) Old USB2.0 120Gb that I happened to already own.
2) New Samsung SSD based
3) 64Gb thumb drive

If you're buying something new the best bet is to try it first, if you can. Otherwise, go off Panasonic's list. Generally I find that *more* devices will work than a manufacturer specifies. They only have time to test so many units...

Thanks Folks great info! On Barry's book I got a android tablet to use as my Hotspot cause my location is to remote for regular Internet- But it seems I can't download it anyone know if the link is working- I was hoping to keep it portable. Cheers!

Hey so I tried out the Seagate Ultra Slim 2TB with my dvx. Did some driver update on my Mac and register stuff then connected to camera. Camera asked to Format drive so I let it and then I copied a few minutes of sdx card footage to the drive. Disconnected and plugged into Mac. It works. Im going to do another test to clock how much for a minute of UHD footage copied to drive. This first time round seemed a little slow to me. I'd like to figure the fastest option so far it seems I should buy more sd cards.
