Seagate FreeAgent for Mac 1.5TB Hard Drive - any good?

I have a 500 gig Free agent sitting right next to me. I use it to archive my BPAV folders. No complaints. Relatively compact, does USB or FW.

My workflow, if it help you to decide, is to dump my SxS card through the express card slot on my MBP. I have a LaCie mini Big Disc that goes to the FW 800 that I edit off, and the Free Agent as an archive plugged into the FW 400.

Hope this helps.

All FW800 drives can be FW400 with an adapter cable (FW800 on one end and FW400 on the other). I think what Seagate is saying is that they include one of those cables in the box.

We bought a Western Digital My Passport Studio 500GB drive from Best Buy for $250 to store our footage on (as an archive). I like it because it's buss powered so we just plug it in when we need it. No need to worry about power. But I wouldn't recommend it as your editing drive (to use while editing in FCP), it's not fast enough for that.

EDIT: My workflow is the exact same as Bob's.

Seagate and Western Digital aren't really ideal for editing. Consumer level hard drives if you will. http://www.g-technology.com/ is where is at. My two WD 1TB drives cost $600 together and I just had the one that was my primary Capture Scratch crash. 600 GB of footage probably gone for good. I replaced it with a 2TB G-Raid 2 for $500. Pro equipment at the same price or even cheaper at this point.

I forgot to add, that the Free agent came budled with 400/800 FW cables and a nifty "Y" USB cable in the event a single USB hub doesn't provide enough juice to run the drive. Bus-powered on the FW, so no extra power cables to carry.

Yes, this is not what many would consider a fast drive for editing. My LaCie runs at the same rpm, if I remember correctly. Despite the "slow" speed I've never found it to be a hinderence.

Thanks for your comments, although from what I can see the the Seagate appears to have the same speed drive as the LaCie, therefore should it not be a fast to edit off?

The original post stated that he just wanted a hard drive to store his footage on, not to edit off of. Pretty much any hard drive will work for that purpose. Just pick a reliable brand.
