SDXC - 2TB on an SD Card!

You gotta love the speed of progress these days.

Very cool advancement here. Even if we don't see it for a while.

But please avoid the "P2 Killer" comments.:zombie_smiley:

Let's finish off tape first.:violent5:

I'd like to see 4 of these cards in a P2 card, an 8 TB P2 card :) It might cost $1.2 million but it would be cool. :)

I'm thinking about this for archival purposes. I can't imagine archiving an entire 1.5TB (average size for me) project on ONE CARD! No LTO. No DLT. No Blu-Ray discs. Just an SD card. Awesome.

WOW!!!

Has anyone purchased a solid state drive yet? Just curious if they've noticed an increase in speed and decrease in power consumption (suppose to be 95% less).

Thing is by the time this stuff is ready for the public and somewhat affordable the camera tech will need massive storage anyways. Look at Red now and P2 cards. Think how much hard disk space we'll need for cameras 10 years from now.

Not too pricey 128 gig SD cards would be great to have a year or two from now when there are more pro level AVC-HD cams to choose from.

Solid state drives were on the top 10 list list of biggest tech flops of 2008.

Maybe they will do better in 09.

I read a story where they replaced the standard hard drive in an MSI Wind with a solid state drive and saw zero improvment in performance and battery life. It's too bad.

It may not increase battery life or performance, but it does make things lighter, cooler, quieter, and MUCH less prone to fail. Hard drives are marked for extinction, at least at the consumer level.

Horse - I just did a search on YouTube for "solid state drive" and each video (from independent testers) showed a huge increase in speed.

ChipG - When you say flop, do you mean because they didn't sell or because they didn't work? :)

Nektonic - You can get a 32gb for $89.

David - Agreed. No-moving parts will be better for all of us.

Because they didn't sell well. Jimerson is right, it is only a matter of time but for now and the next 5 years hard drives will still mainly be used. Solid state is still way too expensive. I'd take it anyday for my laptop over a hard disk drive.

If you guys only knew how many hard drives I have dropped and lost all the data :)
