SDI signal only reading 72060p question?

I have an old Panasonic aj-hdc27fp laying around and wanted to use my atomos samurai to see if it would work on it, however I get a signal that only reads a 720p60 signal, is there a converter that can allow the atomos to read the proper 720p24 signal? also is there a converter that can up scale it to 1080p?

The original tape VariCam’s always runs at 60 and 24 is done as a pull down within a 60 fps stream. Even recording in-camera, the tape is running at 60 fps. Some external recorders, like the old Nano Flash from CD, could do a reverse pull-down and record the 24 discrete frames, but I’m not sure how much of a demand there still is for that, so not sure if any manufacturers still make recorders that can do it. I don’t think think I ever used the reverse pull-down option when I used to run the Nano Flash on my 27H.

99.99% sure what you need is the new model "UpDownCross HD" converter from Blackmagic. It now uses the Teranex standard converter algorithms and does a mighty job. Very high quality at a small price. I use them to convert old 720p 50p camera's outputs to 1080 50p. I did various tests shooting 720p 50 with an FS7 and converting it to 1080 50p. Then compared that with 1080 50p direct out from the camera, both recorded on an Atomos. If someone told me that the 720 50p upscaled to 1080 50p was an original 1080 50p signal I would not have queried the statement for one moment. For the price, they are awesome value. The newer model, it must have HD in its name. It auto-detects whatever signal is present on the input. All you have to do is select via the dip-switches the output format you require. That's it! Simple Simon. Also the new model unlike the old version can take anywhere from 6-30 volts on the power input. We just use D Tap cables to power them when they are camera mounted in the field. If you jam SDI into them they will give you a loop out SDI plus two SDI outputs with your new converted signal. It will also strip out the 2:2 insertion from cameras that output "faux" progressive PSF signals and can convert those signals to true 24, 25, 30p. BTW it will simultaneously give you an HDMI signal of your chosen flavor. To see three old Sony EX3s streaming out a good looking 1080 50p signal on a shoot makes my wallet smile :)

Yes I use the UpDown Cross with both the Atomos and the Nano if the job calls for the old faithful XDCam codec. Why I said 99.99% in my first comment is because I haven't actually tried in on the Varicam. Though I would be surprised if it didn't do the job on the Pana 27.

No. But that looks like some setting enabled in the AJD27 menu system that is allowing the VF info to be displayed on an external output I would imagine? Must be a menu setting to turn that off in the camera? Surely?

Should be a switch under the flip-down door that says something like “Character On/Off”. Make sure it’s in the OFF position.
