Sdi out, the best quality ?

Happy Sunday, DMC
This is just a higher end and super sexy converter to HDMI, any card will work on it, that has SD or HD SDI. Add HDMI and 2k monitoring to an older Kona or BM card for example
Cheers

The only problem with that is you would have to use a monitor with HDMI input, which are typically the non professional monitors, with pro ones having HD-SDI. There is no point in converting the HD-SDI to HDMI to compare quality to see if HDMI is a lower quality source ;-) Yoru just converting both images to the potentially lowest quality format.

We could allow a conversion from HDMI to HD-SDI if we assume HD-SDI is not a quality reduction process.

Oh yeah, absolutely on the nose, i thought it was an interesting addition to the HDMI issue at the beginning of this thread. There's no way we can get a technically accurate look of what we are mastering on a Dell 24 or MAC 23 inch DVI or HDMI in my opinion. They are not broadcast monitors with HD-SDI input. When you put them side by as i have, it is obvious the are different animals.

We need to test it on a broadcast monitor with both of these inputs. JVC DT-V24L1DU 24-INCH BROADCAST STUDIO MONITOR w/HDSDI
The JVC only does HDMI through a DVI cable adapter i believe .

Thats ok, HDMI & DVI are the same video quality wise, its just HDMI has audio embedded and guarrantees support for HDCP. They are extending HDMI's feature set but the basics hold for video quality.

I know it may not be what people want to hear but you can not replace a broadcast monitor with HDMI, for reference on the set, maybe but for broadcast you will never go into any Pro conversion house and the y will be using a HDMI monitor.
Cheers

are you saying that Pros use HD-SDI connections for conversions/color correcting? and if you don't like HDMI, what are your thoughts on DVI-D?

thanks,
mike

In summary from my experience working at conversion houses in Hollywood and FoxTV, HD/SD SDI was the method for accurate monitoring, HDMI is high quality option that has become very popular due to its prosumer camera's counter parts that are on the market. I have a DVI-D in my 8.5 Marshall as well, so i could compare it against HD-SDI, but it looks different as far as contrast and color spectrum goes. If you can afford HD-SDI go for it, HDMI is a good reference monitoring alternative, but we are not just talking about shooting it and the watching it back on a 50 inch TV screen via HDMI, we are talking Broadcast HD.

hope this helps

well, based on your opinions and/or facts about these connections it would only make sense then why Panasonic would charge so much for having HD/SDI ports on its Pro 11UK model plasmas. i researched it about two weeks ago and i think the upgrade was around $3500.00 USA

i'd be interested in to what you find out about DVI-D. it would also be nice to have some statics/facts sheets to back up your views. maybe i'll google it right now. stay tuned....

Is it true that the EX-1, EX-3 output both 1080i and/or 1080psf from their SDI outputs? Barry J mentioned that in an early post on this thread. I was under the impression that it was only 1080i coming from that output. I have an AJA ioHD as well, and would love to bring it out of the SDI out in psf, to ProRes 422 HQ, if that is possible.

Jim, If you have the EX firmware update v1.11 or 1.12, you can choose between the two outputs, i just had mine updated and i noticed it now adds 24psf in the output menu.

I will double check later for you as i have not yet inputed the SONY EX1 directly to the IOHD since the update, I know the AJA wont play native EX 23.98 files on the timeline without converting them to pro res 422 on the sequence. Have you updated your EX yet?
Cheers

Michael, great point, All monitors that have HD-SDI input are significantly higher in cost. Also cameras as well, it was a big deal moving away from HD component outputs. Have you ever seen the difference between HD component and HD-SDI side by side, it differs in contrast and color depth, as with HDMI. As far as facts , test sheets go, please google and let me know what you find out. I speak from actual user experience, seeing the results day after day on scopes as well as monitors and mastering them for Broadcast. Technicians tend to have a different eye than Directors of Photography. We can see detailed color shifts that tech reports average out, use the specs and scopes for safe areas and the eye for detail reproduction, that is why HD-SDI is all i work with, i found an interesting article here , this is broadcast forum but the specs basics still apply, if you are interested. "the fact that HDCP has been added to HDMI would give SDI the upper hand in a purity stand point"

"Yes, an optimal HDMI implementation *can* theoretically be identical to SDI. However, in most cases SDI still looks better in real life."

"SDI is much better than HDMI, here are the reasons:"

-technically more pure, doesn't have HDCP or audio added in the chain
-SDI is directly and I mean directly from the mpeg chip
-using SDI allows analog output from scalers etc.(a must for CRT projector users)
-SDI signals can be sent much further than HDMI and are more robust
-BNC connection is more stable and secure than HDMI
-no HDMI 480i players can come close to the SDI mods on the best mpeg decoders ever, the Panasonics from a few years back
nothing beats a SDI modified Panny RP91/RP82 and their clones

Phil,

Yes, it came with 1.11. Would really appreciate any info you could get on the 24psf from the SDI out and ioHD.

Thanks much

Okay Jim we set up a live EX1 tonite and on the camera in the Video set menu on the 24p system choose 24psf set in stead of 60i. The AJA IOHD recognized it right away as HD -SDI 23.98 PSF input. Then we have to choose in the frame buffer, the middle readout 1080sf 23.98 pro res - yuv and choose your output to the same as well, so u can have a live feed thru it. It worked, now i still can't get live down conversion to SD as a live feed, which is a drag, similar to the issues i had mentioned in the previous thread, also i noticed if you choose just to play your footage you have recorded live off the camera, ( even though it was recorded at 23.98 psf , ) it still outputs 29.97 60i. Sony only half fixed this huh? Anyway will do some more tests later, but you can capture to 23.98 psf to Pro Res HQ from the EX1 as long as it is live mode. Hope this helps somewhat to start with.
Cheers

Phil,

Thanks very much for the quick test. That was the same result I got with pre-recorded 23.98 psf footage, only 29.97 60i out. But hadn't done the live test before. I'm sure it is a bandwidth issue, maybe with the XDcam codec recording or the SDI bandwidth out. Very encouraging. I, too come from a long, picky technical background, a lot with live color correction, and there are times when I would like to use this. But beyond the tech, it is just about beautiful images. These cameras blow me away with their capabilities, and the ioHD is a great tool. But it is also nice that they move about so easily on their own.

Thanks again,
