SDHC Card Transfer Issue - Half Card Won't Copy ("MXF can't be read or Written")

Hey Guys,

First time out with the FS5 for a client was today. I'm having an issue copying the media from the SDHC card to an external or computer hard drive. There are 47 clips on the card, all of which I can see and play fine in the camera. But when I try to copy the card, I get an error on Clip 20 that reads "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "Clip0020.MXF can't be read or written." If I try to look at the card in Catalyst Browse or VLC, I can only play clips 1 - 19. Everything in clip 20 and beyond doesn't work. Same thing if I try to load the card directly into Premiere. Only clips 1-19 work. But, as I said, I can see it all fine in the camera.

Anyone ever had this happen? I'm not sure how to proceed since I can't get the media off the card. I'm fearful that I'm going to lose the media.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like the header hasn't been written - check if the finder is showing a sizeable file. There are various online tools that might be able to fix it - try https://www.cardrecovery.com/sd-recovery/sandisk_sd_recovery.asp for example.

I had the same happen to me years ago with a 5DII video file and had to pay £30 for some online tool, which gives you 2 attempts to fix.

So, don't sweat yet - there are tools that will analyse the file and re-write the header. You might lose the first second or so of video and audio may need re-synching.

SDHC cards work fine for the AVCHD codec in the camera. Just not for shooting XAVC. My suggestion is to put the card back in the camera and try recording another clip. This may bring up an error message that the camera has detected a database error and ask you if you want it fix it. Click on 'yes' . Then try playing that clip back in the camera. I have found that the database error pops up more often than with other cameras and that the Sony fix, works.

Aren't SDXC cards recommended and not SDHC? That's probably the issue right there.

I second "put it back in the camera, see if camera detects error and asks to auto fix". Be careful about how quickly you pop cards out of the camera - even after you hit the stop rec button, the camera has to finish closing out the file, and add matching database information.

Hey Guys,

Thank you for the quick feedback and suggestions. I misspoke: I did indeed shoot on SDXC cards (not SDHC). I was able to access all the media by placing the card directly into the card slot of a different computer (Macbook Pro). So it was either my iMac or the card reader causing the issue. To further test, I used a different card reader and a different iMac and tried copying the card over and it worked fine.
