SD workflow questions

Hi all newbie to the forum here, had my hvx for about a week or so. I have a long form shoot coming up and have a question about SD. am I safe to assume that for a TV video look comparable with beta sp, i should stick with 480 60i ? also i have to shoot about 50 -60 minutes I have 2 8 gig p2's and a 4 g i would love to shoot at dvcpro50 but it is not enough time, if i shoot dvcpro25 is there a difference in quality from shooting on the p2 or just shooting minidv tape?
capture is not an issue because i am still using an old digisuite le for non linear and i have to capture everything analog. as a side note i tried capturing some HD footage thru the component cable and it would not play into my digisuite all that came on screen was noise i am however able to capture composite and s video. obviously my next purchase is a shiny new apple :) any help would be appreciated

Hi Jeff, and welcome aboard. Having never recorded to tape on the HVX yet, I can't say, but I would think DV25 is what it is, no matter how you lay it in(unless Barry has further tech input into that one). You will have the benefit of digital transfer if you go to cards, but since you are importing via Y/C anyhow, there is no point in it, except in money savings of the tape that you would have to use, and deleting bad clips before import. As far as DVCPRO50, that will obviously give better results, akin to DigiBeta color depth (4:2:2). Personally I would shoot to cards, so that you can begin to practice the workflow of P2, and so that you can get that lightning fast roll time when you depress the record button. I know it has saved me many time already in capturing great moments. My Z1, God bless it, takes 10 seconds to roll up HDV sometimes, because I have fast-start disabled for error reduction. But the HVX is instant. Couple milliseconds, when going to P2.
I would say go P2, if for nothing else, for practice in paid situations, and take a backup tape in case you go over. :)

The biggest down fall to any mini-DV cam is the DV25 format with poor 4:1:1 (NTSC) color space. Working with 4:2:2 color space looks so much better even if the resolution is SD or 720x480 (NTSC).

thanks for the reply guys, what i am shooting is 2 half hour cooking shows, i think i might try to shoot the first one in dvcpro50 on the p2's then maybe trying running composite or s or even component out to a beta sp deck for the second one i would think that would yield better results than going to mini dv. any thoughts, suggestions? the 2nd cam is a dvcpro broadcast camera shooting to dvcpro tape and i will have to match the two.

DVCPRO50 on the cards will be astoundingly superior to running composite to a betasp deck. Should be night and day.

DVCPRO is the same basic format as DV, so if you're matching the other camera you could maybe get away with DV or DVCPRO mode, but you'll still get the best standard-def image by using DVCPRO50.

thanks barry, also should i stick with 480 60i as far as matching the broadcast cam? as far as i am concerned they can't get the cineporter out fast enough that would cover anything i need to shoot and then some

If you're trying to match the other camera then yes, keep things as similar as possible, and that would likely mean 480/60i (unless the other cam has other shooting modes?)
