SD to HD

I'm going to film a historical documentary. In a recent visit to the location where we will rool the film, we have found historical archives in many kind of tapes in SD. We will execute the movie in HD.
My question is how is the best way to achieve a better look when resizeing SD material to high definition?
A DOF have advise me about www.teranex.com and www.snellwilcox.com. But this project is low budget. Is there other solutions of making SD look good in HD?
