I'm shooting a series of lectures on my hvx... 480i/60i ? 480i/24P ? 30P ? which would you recommend? also, 480i REC MODE... DVCRO50? DVC PRO? or just DV? I'm recording to a firestore. Thanks for the help! PS I'm editing on FCP

Whenever I can I use DVCPRO50 for SD. The quality improvement is substantial.

With regards to frame rate, for a lecture 60i seems to make sense to me (will look a bit more like live video and I wouldn't think in this case you would be going for a film look.

I have found that 60i looks a bit 'jagged' on diagonal and rounded lines. I would recommend 30p or 24p, especially if you are entertaining the thought of putting your lectures on the web. DVCPRO50. It is by far the best option that Panasonic offers in SD - 4:2:2 colorspace, double the data rate of DV or DVCPRO.

FCP will not have a problem with any of the recording modes that the HVX has to offer.

PRO50 does look nice but at the data rate just go for the 720. You don't loose that much record time and you gain resolution.

I second this....I did a gig at SD on my HVX once to gain a couple more minutes, and once I really got into the production I was cursing myself for not going 72024pn and downrezzin it. I've done gigs since this using the downrez workflow, and the final images looked significantly better.....also you'll have the ability to add more gain while filming, cause once you clean/downrez the video noise basically disappears.....this doesn't just apply to low-light situations either, at 0 gain you can still have a little noise, and once you clean/downrez 72024pn footage that has good lighting to SD you have images that are just amazingly slick.

so I have a 320GB (297 actual) harddrive for this project... 16 times approx 120min lectures (1,920min total) will the entire FCP project (scratch disc and all) fit on this HD if i shoot 720p/30pn? or 720p/24pn? video or film cam mode... which do you suggest? Thanks for the help!

*** no way I can fit all that on there just put 120 min of SD on there with all files and it took up over 30 gigs! but please let me know about 720/30pn or 24pn??? film cam or vid cam mode and any helpful hints! Thanks!!

120 minutes of standard-def DV should take up about 32 gigabytes. So 16 lectures at 2 hours apiece would be somewhere around 512 gigabytes.

720p will take up more space.

If you need to store that much footage, your only choices are a) get a bigger drive, or b) use a different camera. An HMC150 should be able to handle that two-hour lecture in about 4 gigabytes, so 16 lectures would take up 64 gigabytes.

I'd say upgrade the storage....for me storage is never a final purchase...it's an ongoing cost that is always being added.

Each project should be budgeted with some storage/backup costs so that everything is safe and sound(store in 2 or more locations the raw, final, and project).

I have never used a firestore, but I thought that you couldn't transmit native (24 or 30) through firewire, only to p2. Unless there is a firmware upgrade that I am not aware of, I believe that if you are going to use the firestore recording 24pn or 30pn 720 is not an option. You could always shoot 480 24p and remove the pulldown with cinema tools and save yourself a decent amount of space on your scratch disk as well (about 20% or so). In that case, you could shoot to tape to eliminate the double redundancy problem of having just digital files and keep the tapes as maters.

Yeah firestore did an upgrade and records native (although the HVX is not set to native... you set it on the firestore) so i think I'll do 720/30pn because i was not happy with the quicktime conversion of the SD... not much editing to do on the tripod lecture so I'll just burn to DVD for him (120min of 720p will fit on DVD right????) so is QT conversion a good choice? the compressor confused the hell out of me and quicktime that produces the "finalcut" icon might be too large to fit onto DVD... Thanks for the help guys... with all the brains on this site i feel like i'm a pair of brown shoes in a forum of tuxedos!
