SD Mixpre on Ebay

mp-2 is the same box but without mixing capabilities
phantom power is engage on both inputs - so try to turn one off , if you will succeed one disappear9 whithout cut the phantom inside ill pay you for new one :-)
dont know if it reduce 10 db now but as i know you have to change resistor setting inside ( and it definitely sucks )- but what happen if i still want to reduce or i need more to reduce or i want to reduce on non phantom input, or only on one input ? - simply not intelligent desighn , but as i said before - it one of their first ( really dont know what came first ,that one under Shure name or ps-2 ,i believe the shure )
i found the 744 one of the worst designed recorders , the only 2 good points for it are , nice preamp and price , sorry but i really dont understand who where the shmacks on the beta test group to confirm this is good desighn .
if after one year of usage i had to choose to buy this ones again i sadly can say i wouldn't make the same mistake twice .
nagra 5 - these who buy it are complitly nuts , ii stopped use nagra products in 1994 and i will be glad never use or buy it again from the blood suckers .

Sure licensed the MixPre design from Sound Devices, in fact SD may make the boxes and just re-brand them. The internal resistor was I believe the "fix" for the older versions to make the gain the same. The Black Audio pre you had to open to change the cutoff freq or the gain and to change the batteries!. Yes the phantom is all or none and I can see where that could be an issue, though it hasn't been for me yet. The Nagra V sounds great...but it weighs something like 15lbs and costs a small fortune. And I have to mostly agree on the 722. I really wanted to like it but, I found it pretty frustrating to use.
I use the MixPre as a front end (originally for a DAT and now the 671) for FX recording so it's short comings as a mixer don't really have any impact on me. It would be nice if Phantom power and low cut were per channel as opposed to global but that very rarly is an issue for me.

Cheers

722 disappointing for sfx ,what is disappointing about ?

the 744 is a pain in the ass for mixing on the shoulder jobs, what is basically was made for ( not for sfx - the only thing it grate for )
by the way -it is the most resealable hd in my poor region (30 parallel
,2 blocks from the god parking space ,Hollyland)

Acording to SD neither was made for any kind of mixing. When folks complained about the fact that you can't fade a channel all the way out and about half of your range is in the last quarter turn, SD said that the level knobs are mic trims and are supposed to be set and left alone. They are not for mixing.?
I wasn't disappointed as much as frustrated. The menus are pretty much a pain in the tush, and are grouped in a way that for me made it hard to find things. Also the scroll is backwards in relationship to the way you turn the knob. It's too small, never thought I would have that problem- but it makes it easy to hit the wrong thing. The meters sort of merge into the status LED's and can get confusing at a quick glance. The battery is a mixed blessing, it's common but you can't get a charged one in a store so charging can be an issue. Also the mount isn't as robust as I would have expected. A friend had to send his back when the contact pin came off in the battery. To get decent run time you have to put a battery on that sticks out quite a ways. It gets pretty hot in use, I know some people who wont cary it in a bag because of the heat and at least one actually caught fire, though I believe it was the battery that went not the recorder.

None of these are killer faults and it has a lot of good points and I would trade my 671 for one but I'm glad I didn't buy one. I thought I would love it but I didn't. I like using the 671 a lot more. But SD will improve the box and Marantz will probably not be as proactive. THe 722 has a better feature set than the 671, it also has all the things I'm using the MixPre for with the 671. It has better file naming / organizing.

I suspect that if/when I need to get more tracks It will be for less run and gun and more cart oriented work. And in that case I will probably go with Boom Recorder and a new Apple laptop with a firewire interface. About the same price as a 744 and a lot more flexable, and a whole lot cheaper than a Deva or Cantar.
