302 offers a lot more if you can afford it.
True but the bidding was around $350, and your not going to find a 302 for anything close to that.

And your point is? It's a lot less than a cooper also. THe post was about a MixPre on ebay not a debate as to the what the most full function mixer is. I don't really have much use for a 302 but given the choice I would make an even trade, but it's over kill for what I mostly do. On the flip side it's under kill for what many people do. So if it fits what you do it's great. But a MixPre for under $400 is a very good deal, if like any equipment, it fits your needs.

damn straight.

302 is one channel less to 442, just like mixpre is one channel less to 302. so it really is about what you need.

the 302 is not only one faser less , its direct outs less , aditional 2 main outs less , one return less , variable low fq cut less , mono out less , 1/4 output headphones out less , accurate metering less , boom privet line less .
and 442 headphone matris less
and no ,it can accept 1 channel more then the 442 ( if you have dworth hands )

302 is less then i need to most of my works but it very good mixer espacilly who own better one ( by better i mean easy to work with )
the difference between the mix pre and 302 is even more ,the MIX PRE is one of the worst designed mixers for any job - for someone that even thinking to buy it ,ill strongly recommend to start with 302 at least and not because the extra channel .

yeah, i know george, the differences between these mixers are actually pretty huge.

but simply speaking now... in the work that i do, i usually use the 442 or the 302 (more often the 302). and i dont often use the extra features, apart from the extra mic input on the 442... although, yup, they are still there.

so like i said its about what you need.

(mix pre is by far the worst though, no argument there - lack of output limiters and crap metering is enough to kill it for me)... but its still a very clean, simple little unit.

Well two points. First the MixPre isn't a mixer it's a preamp with some minimal mixing capabilities.
Second It has limiters and quite good meters and low cut filters tape return, multiple outs , tone and slate mic etc. so I'm a bit perplexed about what your talking about. It is pointless to compare it with a real mixer because that is not the niche it is designed for. As a mixer for a normal multi mic shoot it's terrible, but that is not the role it was designed for so it's not supposed to do well in that role. Compare it instead to other two channel field micpres and you will find it is a very good box.
It works great for FX recording and pretty much any stereo recording setup, and it also works well for run and gun work if you are never going to need more than two inputs.

If you need a mixer get one, but this thread was about the MixPre and if the eBay auction was a good deal. I'm assuming that the poster's needs fit the MixPre or he wouldn't be asking.

Thanks for the clarification Scott. I think we are all enlightened now. I would like to see you respond to Exile's threads negatively. He'll rip you a new A hole, but you probably like that, living in San Francisco and all.

Ah the junior set speaks out. So is it a boring night? You seem to be on a roll. I guess if I were gay I would be insulted but alas you missed. If you actually read some of what I wrote you might learn something. If Exile writes something I disagree with I will be glad to correct him. I'm not here to fight with people but to try to impart knowledge so that the generally terrible sound on so many low budget films will improve. There is no reason it couldn't be very good sound but there are not that many places where you can get knowledgeable answers to sound questions. Most of those are sound forums that non sound people rarely go to and they can be rather brutal to people who have little experience.

So why don't you stop trying to get a rise out of me and sit down and finish Jay's book. Then we might actually have something to discuss.

Now I get it! As you said in another post
"Sorry Matt, didnt meant any harm. Yankee, you are right. Trying to get 100 posts so i can vote for Sci Fest. So a lot of what I said is nonsense. "
And I made your 100. So glad I could be of service.

Oh and while were on the topic I don't always agree with Mr. Best, however he knows what he's talking about so we can actually have a discussion and agree or disagree based on experience. And I have acquired no new orifices in the process.

Mr best is dead , but here some small voice from the grave .
the mix pre is one of the nicest preamps for dc power usage , but one of the worst products to use as stand alone 2 channel mixer for over all .
for some one who thinking to buy it as prime mixer for every level ill definitely say no -
since it was the sd first product which was innovation in some way 6-7 years ago , my previous wendt 2 was much better unit, at least i could shot down the phantom power while i didnt use it and get some attenuation on the preamp for normal work or dint get it when i dont need it ( you had to be with me today while i mixed some stuff with 442 preamp gain only since the difference where 20 db on each sentence)

not everything that carry sd name is pleasant enough and it is 2 of 3 products i have right now .

What good advice from the grave....

While I basically agree I think you may be mixing up the MP2 (I think it was called) with the MixPre. The MixPre was not SD's first box and phantom power is switchable. On the earliest version of the MixPre Phantom power changed the gain of the input but this was changed a number of years ago (3-4?). I don't think the MixPre is perfect and I wouldn't use it for "mixing" but when compared to it's competition (Went, Black Audio, Grace, Lunatec, PSP, Apogee) I think it's a very good deal. I have used a number of the above and the MixPre holds up well feature wise sounds great and is one of the lowest cost.
That said I have a number of issues with SD's choices. I would like to be able to set the meter ref. level, I would like the the level knobs to be gangable and ideally less easy to nudge.
I find the menues on the 722 & 744 a bit cumbersome to navigate and their stance that the mix section is only mic trims so you can't actually mix with them to be weak at best. But at half the price of the Magra V and a third to a quarter that of a Deva or Cantar they are still a good deal.

So I chose the MixPre over the Went, partially because of the meters , but that's really personal preference.
