SD Meta-Data

So ..

In Barry's AF100 section "Understanding Metadata" (pg. 203) there is a
brief discussion of using the P2CMS program to edit the meta data.

It's not at all clear to me how the P2CMS program can be used to edit the
meta-data on an SD card.

The closest thing I can find is "Save to SD Memo" and I still don't know how to associate
a memo an individual clip on the SD card.

None of the folders on the SD card appear to satisfy P2CMS..

I'm stuck...

thanks

Go to www.panasonic.com/p2hd look under the resources section. There is a whitepaper, or shall I say a colorful whitepaper that talks about the Metadata workflow. Start there. Post back when you have been able to load it into the camera. Yes it is a little like doing Double Jump jumprope, but if learned you feel so smart. ;-)

Best,

Jan

Thanks Jan ..my favorite from the Whitepaper so far ..

"Imagine how much
easier it would have been to find the famous
clip of Monica Lewinski giving President
Clinton a hug if they had metadata on all of
the clips"

Indeed :-)

Ok .. so I think I get it ..

I used P2CMS -> Tool -> Metadata Upload

And saved using the Save to SD Memo option

However, when I go to the AF100 -> Metadata -> Card Read

and choose the MTS file I wrote out of P2CMS, is says

"Card cannot be read due to incompatible data"

So .. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

If I can get this to work .. at least we can alter our work flow to write to the
SD cards some of metadata that we would normally log in ingest ..
.. it's a kind of inverted from what we did with P2 Logger .. but workable...

assuming I can get around this problem.

thanks
jeff

Try the Metadata from P2Viewer not P2CMS. Also you cannot change the File names as you can in P2. You have to leave the file names as the P2 viewer names them. Did you format the card in the camera? Also, there is a similar pathway in the AVCCAM viewer.

Windows :embarasse Garr! I'll have to bootcamp one of the macs...

Speaking of, any chance of getting an SD formatter for the Mac?

jeff

Heck I don't trust the Windows formatter, I use the camera. Also did you update your camera? It may be the extra/double lines the mac generates are getting in the way. The little update on the camera should resolve this as well.

So .. had an old PC we were using a P2 reader (PCMCIA slot :-)...) ..

P2 Viewer worked .. I was able to load the metadata into the AF100 .. yea!
I turned on Meta Data record ...

shot a clip...

but .. I can't get FCP Log and Transfer to read the metadata when it's ingesting...

Any insight?

jeff

I have a degree in physics from UCLA, can code C++, php, actionscript, mySQL and I'm confused.

Jan could you please post a direct link to the metadata white pages?

Thus far I've completely ignored using the metadata because implementation of such has been anything but clear.

In a thread i started about this a few months ago, barry pointed me to this article
http://www.dvxuser.com/jason/P2-Name-article/
It worked for me, using a mac as well, but The meta data itself so far has been useless in a FCP based workflow.
I could be missing something of course, i'd be happy to have someone point out how to use the meta data in FCP
if I've got it wrong.
