SD lens for sale/suggestions for hpx500?

Hi, I've read through the very informative sticky re: SD lenses for the hpx500. Just picked up the camera and need a lens, wondering if anyone has suggestions for where I can buy used SD lenses to use, or a place to rent them in NYC area. Or, if anyone has a decent one for sale in the area I'd be interested. Any model recommendations anyone can give, I would be most obliged. I'm shooting lots of live band/music video/documentary type stuff. For multiple camera shoots, this will be my main camera, as augmented by a few hpx170s, in general. Thanks so much!

Hey Matt,
I think Ebay is going to be your best bet. I purchased one from Bexel Broadcast out of LA recently through Ebay. Very nice lens and I got a great deal! Looks beautiful!
Basically, offer them half(ish) of what they're asking and they seem to usually take it, at least looking over their history in their feedback. Nice people though.

You can try this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/CANON-J15aX8B4-...s=65:3|66:4|39:1|240:1318|301:0|293:1|294:200

It's a 15x 8 Lens w/ extender. Breathes a bit but image is super. That's what I am currently using.

Here also is a list of their current lenses:

http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Bexel-B...5480QQ_sidZ2560269QQ_trksidZp4634Q2ec0Q2em322

I will tell you what. If you could pick up the 13x9 or the 9x5.5 at half the price they're asking, you would be loving life when it comes to shooting. Very nice lenses and very expensive new.

B&H usually has a nice selection of used lenses, but you're going to pay out the nose for them.

And a word of caution - Get a "B4 IRS" lens or "IRSD" or something like that. Don't get anything that says "BEVM" or "BEVM-28" because it is an older model. Not that they don't work, but typically they will be external focus lenses. And make sure it's Canon "J" or Fujinon "A", not the "YJ" series.

This would be a super lens:

Hope that helps.

i have bought quite a bit from bexel, both on ebay and in the store. the stuff is usually as good or better than described and yes, low ball them. they have a crapload of sd glass they want to unload right now. if you go in the store there is a huge table full of sd lenses just stacked up...

The usual rental companies in NY are AbelCineTech, LVR, Tamberelli, Bexel, TCS and more. Sorry if I have forgotten somebody off the top of my head.

Great info...I was waiting for a review like yours before making my purchase. Will check out ebay.:)

Also, please excuse my ignorance, but when you talk about a lens 'breathing' what exactly does that mean/look like when you are looking at your image, and what are the drawbacks to this?
Thanks again!
Matt

"Breathing refers to when a lens' optics change the apparent focal length slightly when shifting the mechanical focus. Some (often more expensive) lenses are designed to lessen the degree this effect. Lens breathing does not prevent one from racking focus or following focus with this lens, but it lessens the desirability of any type of focus adjustment, since it noticeably changes the perspective and composition of the shot."

Thanks so much for the suggestions! Greatly appreciate it. I'm stepping up from the handheld cams and am hence a rookie here. Kit, is this an example of a lens to stay away from then?

Also, which were the 13x9 or the 9x5.5 lens you were talking about Kit?
Thanks again for your time and wisdom!
Matt

Precisely. Forget the external focus stuff. Been there, done that. Looks fine through the viewfinder, looks like crap from the outside.

This would be a great one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...IA&itu=FICS%2BUFI%2BUA%2BIA%2BUCI&otn=4&ps=10

Looks like someone beat you to the others...

Although I agree with your warning about YJ series, I think you're a bit off with the remark about BEVM and IRS. As far as I know is the 'BEVM' (and BERM) a Fujinon abbreviation and 'IRS' and such the Canon nomenclature for their lenses. I have a fairly new Fujinon (2 years) which is certainly an internal focus lens and also a BEVM-28.

For more info on these matters look here ABELCINE

I use a Canon 9x5.2 IRS (with 2x ext), which is great for day to day shooting, no breathing, and very clear focus. My second lens is a Fujinon 15x8 BEVM-M28, a good lens with some electronic features , it was cheap and almost brandnew.

I am very happy with the SD lenses most of the time. For high-end clients I rent an HD lens from a colleague.

John,

You are correct on all counts. A BEVM-48 would mean CAC compatible.

I'm curious, I'm selling one of our Fujinon A15X8BEVM lenses, how much did you pay, if I may ask?

Thanks!

Take a look at this:

http://www.canon.com/bctv/products/lens_no.html

http://www.fujinon.com/Broadcast/FAQ.aspx

All I was giving reference to is making sure that you select a good lens and spend accordingly to age. Even if in good condition, older lenses typically have rougher and louder gears. Newer lenses typicallly have smoother and quieter gears.

Thanks Kit and everyone else for your suggestions. I ended up getting a CANON J15X9.5B4 2/3" w/ a WIDE ANGLE, and will use till I get used to the setup. Problem is that the pin configuration is different. Kit, I think you mentioned that you found adapters somewhere. I'm wondering if these are something I could find at a place like B&H by chance? Thanks again!

I did pay around 1800 euro's at the time, and the lens is in mint condition, very smooth and quiet gears. Don't use it very much though, i'm a bit in love with my Canon 9 x 5.2.

good luck with yours

I ordered my own 12 pins and soldered them up myself. A little time consuming, but pretty easy if you know what you're doing. I believe you can find adapters, but they are deathly expensive, like $100-$200.

I have some lenses available that might work out for you with the HPX500. My website is www.mccom.tv you can see all my lenses that i have in-stock for sale right now.
I also have an EBAY page with all my lenese on it. MY Ebay user name is mccominc.

Thanks,
Martin Mehalko

I know this is semi off topic but...

So you're the guy that went public with the whole "trade in your 2/3" for a $30k discount on the 3700". What's the details on that?

I am interested in an SD lens for a HPX500, but am still a bit confused buy all the numbers and letters. Can someone point me in the "right" direction asto which model(s) lens('s) I should be looking for. I have an old 2/3" lens from an old Sony BetaCam, but I think it has an external focus which exacerbates the breathing problem?

Nobody out there? Any Help would be appreciated. All the links in the previous posts are dead, so there is know way for me too see what lenses were being discussed.
