I tried making your top images a 4:3 aspect ratio and it looks right. So you may have recorded it in 4:3 on accident and are bringing it into a 16:9 (DV Widescreen) project.

There are three modes to record in the HVX for standard def.
One is Squeezed (This is native 16x9 mode which will need to be edited in a 16:9 ratio project), the second is Letter Box (This is 4:3 but will add black bars to the top and bottom). The Third is good old 4:3 (which will be edited in a standard 4:3 project).

Any way, that is my guess.

You needed to be in squeeze mode when doing sd if your going for 16:9, that's what the ccd's are on the hvx (16:9). If you squeeze it you will retain all the quality you can for 16:9 SD footage.

oh.......okay. i do remember having it set on 'squeeze' but hadn't read up on exactly what it was. or maybe i switched it to squeeze mode after i recorded that (this is from the 2nd week of having the camera four months ago)

maybe i had something in FCP setup wrong when i brought it in. i think i had switched FCP to DV-anamorphic....but that's what it should be set as in easy setup for 16:9 footage right? :embarasse
