Sd card with HVX205a?

Probably a silly question, but I just got this thing yesterday and I'm determined to learn everything I can, not only about this camera, but about shooting in general. Anyways, i can't afford the camera, but got it anyhow, though there's no way I can pick up a P2 card anytime soon. Can I actually record footage to an SD or SDHC card? My little manual hasn't made that clear yet.

So, this I'm sure is going to be the first of an endless series of questions. Thanks!

Like David said, DV Tape will work.

They'll knock you back, what, 5 bucks for a pack of 3 maybe?
Amazon are great for getting 3 - 10 packs for well under $20.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Thanks guys! I guess I'll be shooting to tape for a while. From what I'm learning, though, there are quite a few features (over and undercrank) that can only be used with the P2 card.

I'm working my way through the manual now and don't want to play around too much until I get through it. For instance, I checked out the manual zoom ring when the camera was in Servo, and then five minutes later read how doing that can damage the camera!

I'm really interested in shooting in 24p and playing around with depth of field. That's gonna be fun!

Hi, welcome to the fantastic world of the HVX. Save up fast and get a P2 card so that you can really unleash the HD power of the HVX, it is truly amazing.

One word of warning, if you are planning to shoot on tape don't be tempted to use Sony DV tapes. Always use Panasonic DV tapes otherwise you will end up with clogged heads that head cleaning tapes won't clear.

Good luck.

Weenie.

Only 32 minutes?

Only 32 minutes?

From what I can tell, if I did come up with fourteen hundred bucks for a 32gb P2 card, I would only be able to record 32 minutes in HD, yes?

I apologize, again, I've got a lot to learn, but any shooting in 720p is going to be DVCPRO HD, rather than DVCPRO, right?

Do you guys think I should buy this Barry Green book that everyone seems to be talking about for $90?

And, what do I need to get the P2 footage into my computer? Firewire direct from the camera, or do I need some kind of reader?

I keep coming back and editing this thing....what about DVCPRO? That's a special kind of dv tape, right?

If you would have bought the HVX200a (US model), you would have received a free 16GB P2 card, Barry's Book and a Full US Warranty. That is if you are in the US.

You definitely are a beginner. DV/DVCPro are DV25 codec. Do a Google search and read about them.

Codecs, Tapes and other Mind-Boggling Issues

Thanks! And believe you, me, I've been scouring the internet for information. (I did order the Green book, by the way.) What I can't seem to find the answer to, is whether or not I can put a DVCPRO tape into this thing. DVCPRO is supposed to be faster, and nowhere does it say "The HVX can record using the DVCPRO format to the P2 card."

Thanks to you (and I mean that sincerely) I now know that DVCPRO is a compression format. I also know that there are DVCPRO tapes out there that look suspiciously like MiniDV tapes! Can I use them in the HVX? I'm just now getting into the menu section of the manual, so perhaps some questions will be answered there, and almost certainly more will be revealed when the Barry Green book arrives.

By the way, the external mic holder is too big for my Azden, and for the life of me I can't figure out a way to attach the shockmount that came with the mic. Obviously I can simply attach it to the shoe, but what if I find myself in a situation where I need the mic and an on-camera light? Like a wedding or something? Buy some rubber shims so the holder that came with the HVX will hold the mic?

I'm definitely a beginner, but the learning is already pretty exciting!
