Now that I'm in L.A. and getting an apartment pretty close to The Writer's Store, I'm thinking of giving this a shot to see if they can whip me into shape a bit. I'm writing at a pretty good momentum right now, but I'm new here and would love to have someone I can get objective feedback from on a regular basis. At $49, it seems like a deal.

Anyone have any experience with these guys.

I don't know anything about their program, but it's $49 per session..I'm guessing that is for one hour of time. All to have someone ask you what you want to do, what you are doing and did you do what you said you were going to do, etc. Email me and I will kick your ass for free. I've worked as a coach for many years...mostly outside of this industry, so I know the drill well. Seriously email me and I'll keep tabs on you and motivate you to get it done...plus get you into our writing group so you can get writing feedback.

Time to walk the talk. Let's go.

LOL, thanks! I'm new here and I'm very interested in meeting other writers in the area. I'll PM you later today. About to go apply for an apartment in NoHo.

I was hoping you would get a laugh out of that. In all honesty I hate to see anyone spending money until they have to...especially new-to-LA filmmakers. But I will kick you into shape in all areas. LOL...and you will have fun in the process. Talk later.

Think a lot of us would like to hear about any experiences you would care to share about LA including The Writer's Store.

Sure! Well, first off, it's not as expensive out here as everyone, especially your parents, want to scare you into thinking it is. I'm from South Florida, where my girlfriend and I were paying $1250 a month for a 2/2. And we just signed the lease out here on a really nice 2/2 for $1350 a month. Mind you, none of the apartments here come with a fridge for some strange reason and all the stove/ovens are gas, so that becomes a new monthly bill. But groceries are way cheaper! Thank God or whoever for Trader Joe's! Oh, and the produce, the beautiful, beautiful produce. I think it has to do with all the farm land out here.

If you're looking for an area that's affordable and centrally located near the entertainment industry, I've found no better place than North Hollywood. Film Tools, The Writer's Store, costume and prop shops, and various camera and light rental places just a couple of blocks to the east, in Burbank; Universal City and Hollywood just to the south. The Red Line Metro starts/stops in North Hollywood, and it'll take you down Hollywood Blvd and into Downtown L.A. If you don't mind paying $100 - $200 more, nearby Studio City is beautiful. Sherman Oaks is a nice option, too.

The Writer's Store is amazing! Located on beautiful Magnolia Blvd and surrounded by such shops as Blast From the Past - comics and movie memorabilia/collectibles, It's a Wrap - thrift clothing store where all the clothes are from movies and television shows, and Dark Delicacies - horror themed comics, clothing, dvds, and collectibles. The Writer's Store itself is pretty small, but it has just about every screenwriting book, software, training DVD ever. In the back are a bunch of nice cozy offices for one-on-one consulting, and the employees are very helpful.

Speaking of which, a lot of people don't believe me on this, especially those who've lived here a while, but, speaking as an East Coaster, everyone is super nice out here. It's unnerving at first. I'm sure I'll start taking it for granted without realizing it.

L.A. is a huge place and there's plenty to be had out here. There's always P.A. work and everyone starts there, it seems. What's important is what you do to build your momentum. There's plenty of places you can end up in the industry without even realizing it. It's best to have a clear goal and not allow yourself to get overwhelmed.

If you're going to come out here you'll pretty much need a car, especially if you take P.A. work. The roads and streets aren't in an easy to follow grid like they are in most cities back East, so do yourself a favor and get a GPS.

That's it for now!

Really appreciated the description. Nicely done. Wonder if there isn't some profitable way for you to share your experience - some freelance thing? How many thousand people would like to have this experience, whether or not they actually plan to work in the industry?

Lived in SF for a while. Know what you mean about people being nice. However, although people appeared more laid back, generally speaking I felt, they are very serious about their individual crafts.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
