Screen turns dark in Manual Mode

Have any of you guys experience the darkening of the screen whenever you go manual mode by pressing the menu button twice for the GF1? I'm using the old manual mode, I have no idea how to work the latest manual mode option.

Screen goes extremely dark in every mode.
 
this is because it is showing you exactly what it looks like at that iso setting, so no gain. normally the camera would add gain to brighten the picture if there isnt enough available light, but as the manual mode enables you to set the gain, this doesn't kick in. to add gain, just increase the iso.

the manual settings really come into their own when lighting can be controlled, like on a set.
 
I find it really strange cause it didn't occur to me before, I used to go to manual settings without increasing the ISO...

How do I go manual mode with the latest one? (old manual mode isn't that old for some reason :o)
