What do you guys think of these very basic, low light shots?

Re: Screen grabs from a Doc in Korea

this day was very cloudy and very grey. We didnt have much control of the weather, so we exposed the best way we could.

Re: Screen grabs from a Doc in Korea

They don't look bad. Good use of natural light. Thats hella people walking. It's nice and tell grandma ringing the bell I said Hi. :)

Re: Screen grabs from a Doc in Korea

Great use of contrast. I don't mean light contrast, I mean content wise. The first two shots are very solitary and the 3rd is packed with people. Excellent!!! Is that a street festival/event or is that a typical day downtown?

The lighting on the second grab is not as good as the first. There is distracting reflections on the lens. (I count 3 areas; 1 on her face, 1 on her shirt, and another between the flower and chair.) Was that on purpose, for style?

Re: Screen grabs from a Doc in Korea

yes, we wanted the light to give a little flare at points...the whole shot of course is not like this, just moments when were a tracking and panning. We liked the style...we wanted warm rays of light a lens flare in the frame at certain moments

Re: Screen grabs from a Doc in Korea

is it one of the streets near Dangdemon :)...excuse me if I did not spell it correctly.

Re: Screen grabs from a Doc in Korea

The crowded area is Myeongdong, downtown Seoul. It is one of the popular shopping districts and is normally this crowded on the weekends. :)

Re: Screen grabs from a Doc in Korea

i hate shopping for that reason.....

the first shot is great; the second is great contentwise, but maybe a little light into the face would help. the third is just crazy...

Re: Screen grabs from a Doc in Korea

Very nice stuff. I can live with the flares on her face if it's something that is momentary, or intermitent (like sometimes her face will shade the lens)

It has very nice use of natural lighting for the interview, and the bell ringer. Good stuff.

Also I like to point out that the ability to see some images from such a distant country that are not mediated by any media, is symply amazing. This serves for this post but for many others as well. This forum is one of the things I really love the internet for...

Re: Screen grabs from a Doc in Korea

I completely agree taubkin. Today alone I was able to see shots from Korea, Brazil, North Carolina ;D And right now I am communicating with you in Brzail and I am also MSN chatting with my friend in Holland. What a world!!!

Re: Screen grabs from a Doc in Korea

Yes - wonderful world of Internet. How ironic that its development was paid by US taxpayers from US defense budget.

Long live the big bad USA! ;)

(no political post intended)

I am with you guys! Internet and communications technology in general is a great enabler of understanding between cultures/nations. It can also become the most powerful weapon in hands of hate propaganda and inscrupulous (is that the word?) commerce. Like everything, this sword has two edges, the coin has two sides, and the bread has two crusts.

Re: Screen grabs from a Doc in Korea

Really liked the sharpness on the first one - nice grabs, thanks for sharing  :)

Well, if you didn't want it political, then why write what was obviously a cheap shot against the US?

Anyway, back on topic ...

Here are some shots in South Korea from a terrain flight I was on two days ago.

No mans land in the Demilitarized Zone. To the left of the shot is North Korea. This photo was taken several weeks ago at one of the ROK observation posts.

Oh, you misunderstood. I was being sarcastic.

Again, no politics intended, but hey - I just returned back from my native land (Czech Rep. in case anyone on this board missed it ;)), and it pisses me off to see people so quickly forget who was responsible for the collapse of communism... without the US, we'd still be standing in line for toilet paper, and marching in May Day parades, and chant stupid slogans.

So - for the record: I am pro US (with some reservations to Americans' choice of food and culture). Unlike many of my country men (and women ;)).

Those are great shots, BTW - especially the last one - the DMZ. Shivers up my spine.

Re: Screen grabs from a Doc in Korea

Ranger - are you military here in Seoul? I really liked your shots. Also, did you use the DVX for that? Great stuff. We should do some work together in Seoul if you have time.

Re: Screen grabs from a Doc in Korea

Hey Dvx_South_Korea. Nice grabs. The third one freaks me out. So many people shopping. Are these people shopping or window shopping or is it more like there are sooo many people in Seoul that if 2% decide to go shopping then the streets look like your third grab? And I thought my world was crowded!

Re: Screen grabs from a Doc in Korea

they are all shopping or atleast there to hang out and eat...there are a lot of great places to eat there.

Re: Screen grabs from a Doc in Korea

Looks good.. but in the second shot, there's a terrible case of backlighting. and I do'nt think there's adeqaute light on the woman's face... perhaps you should have shot the interview 180degs the other way?

Re: Screen grabs from a Doc in Korea

yes the light is too low on the face of the second interview. We had a kino daylight on her at first, but they would have us turn it off...and we couldn't re set-up when they were already sitting and ready to go. So we opened up the iris and did the best. I think we can brighten it up a bit in post.
