Screen grabs for AF102Test - Shooter NZ

Shooter

Here are some simple and quick screen grabs from my test yesterday.

Scene setting is F1 ONLY. Nikkor lenses ( out standingly sharp on my monitors)

Screen Grabs are direct from the camera ( un CC /graded) via CS5 PremPro

JPEGS do not come even close to reflect what I see on my reference monitors so I post these with considerable trepidation!

Skin tones are really messed with by JPEG! eg... there are no highlight blooms at my end. Color and tone is very cinematic and naturalistic where I am viewing them!

They are dissapointly compressed and I now understand why anything shown on the web is subject to so much unfounded "critique" by the pixel peepers.

Test were simple unstyled table top ( from stuff we had at the studio) and a very rough blue screen effort because thats what I mainly use this level of camera for and I needed to know what worked. (I do usually take the time to do it with some love, care and attention)

All shots shown were full tonal range on the waveform.

Thanx Barry

My tests yesterday convinced me that I do not need to use the RED for an upcoming production ( table top food and product shoot).

I am so looking forward to shooting with the AF 102 on a full production with all my normal resources.

Here is my best out take from my basic tests yesterday....

Compared to my HVX, I now have in camera control of everything I want to control. eg the subtle control of DOF and color temp would be two areas.

I will just have to cope with the AVCHD workflow ( and 4:2:0) but I have resigned myself to that.

I don't know

I'm seeing noise and muddy pixels and smearing and strobing all over the 2nd water droplet on the 2nd tomatoes right side.

(muhahah)

Actually, very nice! The eggs and tomatoes are beautiful! Nice skin tones too!

The Scene Files are F1 with no changes? What made you pick F1? Tests, or something in F1's settings?

Are you leery of Vimeo, or will you be uploading? I'm curious as to the difference between jpeg compression and Vimeo compression.

What's your lighting? It's gorgeous! Thanks for sharing!

I am so leary of posting any "compressed" version of what we shot considering the extreme loss of quality exhibited in the simple process of compressing screen grabs to these jpegs.

I always work in a broadcast workflow and rarely in the realms of web , youtube, vimeo etc . ie. I dont usually see my work as this "lossy"

I am now so sympatico with those that have posted up quality work or tests and have taken the "flak" for it due to the display medium that was involved.

I have my show reels etc on my Samsung Galaxy mobile phone (Flash) that look better than what I usually see from these streaming sites.

I will post up the little scenario (as screen grabs) that we did with the Nikkor set to check the FOV of each lens from a fixed position. Its only a Macbeth chart but it helped us understand the crop factor of 4/3.

I intend to shoot more test with this camera next week when I take possesion of it and I will post that stuff instead of this test series.

(I have a Youtube account but not sure about Vimeo note to myself ( check))

Reason for F1 was in the limited time of the days test... we did not want to get into evaluating every conceivable configuration and set up available. That gets far too confusing and is not a great methodolgy.

Understandable about the Vimeophobia, Shooter.

So how did you light these scenes?

Thanks.

Easiest lighting there is.

3/4 back / top lighting with a 4' x 4' diff frame ( 2k Blonde) and a rim back light (600 watt arri fresnel). No fill because frame wraps the light as you wish by angle and proximity to subject

Quick and dirty ( but effective)

Looks great. Which Nikkor lenses did you use ?

Grabs you are seeing... Nikkors 24mm, 35-70 zoom, 55mm macro . ( My whole set were tested and all were great))

Just a pity you cant see what we saw on the test shoot: SDI from AF102 to Panny 1700HD reference monitor. These lenses really shine and blew us away.

They are a a piece of kit we are usually not familiar with because we are used to cine lenses such as Ultra Primes etc. The Nikkors do not dissapoint from a quality POV.

Thank you. That makes me very happy since I just got the 28-70 nikkor 2.8 zoom for my af100 which can't arrive soon enough. Thank you for sharing
