You mean 'learn 3 point lighting'? If so, than yes, I couldn't agree with you more. We are shooting some more footage for the same short and I've been picking through the lighting forum. We'll see what ive learned i guess.
The first one has potential. Now... if you had a backlight shining on him, it'd make the difference. The small rim would've pulled him right out of the flatness and made it much more visually interesting.
Interesting. Im taking the ol' 'work light' route seeing as how this is my first time with light and my dad owns a ton of em. Next time around ill remember to get light on both sides.
Maybe i should have thrown this one into the lighting section.
For the 1st shot, I would say it's a little too hard for my taste. If you're shooting with work lights, try bouncing the light source off of a whiteboard.
3 point lighting is overrated. unless you are going for the hollywood look.
But i agree, right now your dvx's latitude is working against you. The black dude is way under exposed, especially his left cheek, and the other one has lighting that is too harsh. There lacks shape to the 2d space.
another thing to watch for in that 2nd grab are unrealistic shadows. Very rarely does ambient light in a room cast a double shadow on the wall behind you ;-)
I'm fairly new at lighting too though so thats just my 2 cents. Keep learning.
