Hey, I was wondering if anyone knew of a good program to buy that can record instruments onto a computer? We primarily use a Keyboard, and we have the cable to connect it to the comp, but no program to record it to. We've finally moved into the realm of scoring our own movies and we're all a little new to this department. So any help would be appreciated! Thanks.
 
Well first don't use any audio input built into the computer, they are notoriously noisy and generally don't sound very good. So you need some kind of interface, and that will have to work with your software.

But first what platform? Windows or Mac.

Even though your asking about a recording program, your scoring so I would go toward one of the music oriented applications. But most are not cross-platform so you need to tell people what computer you have first.
 
Then Logic is a good choice. For just recording you could also use Sound Track Pro if you have Final Cut Suite it came as part of the bundle. There are a number of very cheap to free stereo editors out there but if your scoring you need more tracks than that. You also could go with Pro Tools but it's MIDI is much more limited than Logic and Logic is used by a LOT more musicians so you will probably be able to get more focused user groups. I'm an editor not a composer so YMMV. I'm on ProTools and if you were mostly recording and editing AND you might need to go to a studio and bring your session that would probably be an app to consider, though Logic is probably almost as well supported.
 
Don't rule out Cubase, which is the little sibling of Hollywood's favorite Nuendo. Like ProTools, but with MUCH better MIDI. I'm still a fan of ProTools and run it in my main suite, but I keep a portable Cubase setup on hand.
 
Ah forgot about Cubase. Don't quite understand the "Hollywood's favorite" bit about Nuendo. The only sizable user base for Nuendo that I know of is europe.

Oh we also should mention Digital Performer and on the low end Garage Band.
