Hi folks -- here is a short spec commercial I submitted for a national video competition held by Scion of America to promote their new cars.  Any type of video (under 2 minutes) could've been submitted, so I chose to do a commercial.  

Best part is...I won!

Shot 100% on the DVX100A (except for the graphics, of course).  Now that I've seen the video (about 1 million times), I find there are lots of little things I would have liked to change, but overall I'm pleased with the results.  I would really appreciate some feedback though...

but, Congratulations !

Sure, most perfectionists can always (and will always) find things that they would love to change. But you did a sharp, smart ad. PERIOD.

It's a nice mix of keeping the product in mind, but also NOT bombarding the consumer with "blah blah blah" sales-pitch. And humor always sells. Your "ad" made me laugh. Good job! ;D

p.s. if you don't believe me about the "perfectionist" syndrome then either (A) you are one, or (B) ask disjecta, he suffers from it also, and can explain it in great "painful" detail. ;D

Huh? Oh sorry I was sleeping. What do you mean by "painful"? Are you implying I talk to much? :D

i got the dreaded bandwith exceeded error. I'll keep watching for it though. Congrats ont he contest!!!

Actually I was referring to your outstanding camera work. You're a perfectionist. I can spot one a mile away. I bet my left nut that you fuss and fume over every shot, edit, and then when you're done you fuss some more! Hahaha :D

Everyone remember to watch this and give AJ his "props".

It really is a wonderful idea that looks like it was simply executed and well done. A great example to all of us on what the dvx can do. I'm really impressed.

Sorry about the bandwidth problem. I have gotten one offer (so far) to host my video, so maybe you'll have an easier time downloading it soon -- we'll see...

Wow, the question about being a commercial director really boosted my ego! The answer is no -- actually I'm an electrical engineer. But I've been dabbling in video (mostly as a hobby) for the past 12 years or so. Lately though, I'm finding that my "hobby" is really turning into a "passion!" Cheap non-linear editing tools, awesome cameras (DVX), and DVD-delivery makes it all so fun! So hey, if your ad agency is looking to throw some work to new "talent (sic)," I'd probably jump at the chance!

AJ - well, I wouldn't get your hopes set too high about my agency and they're a bit stodgy -- I've been trying to get them to let me direct my own scripts for years. But don't let that stop you from bugging other people. And if you can do a couple more spec spots for a reel you can probably get representation, which would go a long way towards turning your passion into a career. If that's your goal, of course. I may just be projecting my own desires onto yours. ;D

I work with commercial directors on a day-to-day basis and my advice is to shoot shoot shoot and build an awesome reel. Then just go fishing for a production company and hope you get someone's attention.

We have around 11,000 commercial director's reels in our library. This is a HIGHLY competitive and saturated industry that takes tremendous talent, persistence and innovation.

If you really want to direct spots go for it and get ready for a wild ride. If you're gonna go, go all out.

I saw your KFC spot on your website and laughed! You weren't kidding about "...fishing for a production company..." hahaha
