Ideally, we would ALL be going to school for something we loved and would be given the gift of working in that field when all is said and done.
I've always loved theater. But a degree in theater seemed to be pointless in terms of finding a job. So, I got my BA in film. I learned a lot and don't regret the choice. I'm working on a graduate degree at NYU right now in Digital Imaging and design. More simply, this is film post production. I thought this would be a cool skill/art to strive to learn while giving me some employment opportunities upon graduation.
For any of you who are considering a track in post-production, choose your program/school WISELY. NYU is a fantastic University but they were not very forthcoming about the program during orientation. It very heavily favors 3D modeling and TOY STORY types of post production. It has very little editing, (I am now self-teaching myself Premiere) and compositing is fairly barebones. I graduate in MAY, my thesis will be primarily compositing, lighting and rendering and I have yet to be offered the types of classes that will best help me execute my thesis.
Ultimately, it has been a good experience but I love being this close to being done. Thing is, many people get out of college and wind up working in a field that has NOTHING to do with their degree. It goes to show that one of the single most important aspect of going to college is not what your major is but simply having gone to school. Employers like to see that you started something and finished something.
Now lets hope this will pay off cause currently, I make sh*t.
