GH4 School of Timelapse | Hyperlapse

I Was hoping to start a dedicated thread for advice on shooting hyperlapse & timelapse on a GH4.

I've seen amazing footage ( https://vimeo.com/108018156 ) where hyperlapse is mixed into the video and would love to learn how to perfect it. The creator shot that handheld with a GH2.

If there are members with experience with timelapse, hyperlapse, it would be great to get your advice on technique, settings, etc..
 
I've been experimenting with VFR 2 frames/second , since I have to timelapse shoot a multi-hour indoor event next month. The GH4 was able to do 4 hours on a fully charged bat (with the LCD off, at 24fps). With the battery grip you could double that I guess. In post you can speed it up however much you wish - some parts more, some less if needed. I forget exactly how much card space it took, but it was quite a bit less than 64GB.
 
how do you achieve the same motion with the VFR method (2fps) as you would with taking a bunch of stills? stills method you have the capability of reframing your shot with each still where as the VFR method is a constant video.
 
I don't know how you could achieve that motion with VFR - unless you used a motorized slider, but obviously the extent of movement would be much more limited. For the shoot I'm doing I have to put the camera up in the rafters and can only retrieve it after the event.

You would need to be able to move the camera in a semi-stabilized way, because much of the wow factor comes from the smooth almost stedicam like movement of the frame. You need to give your post stabilization good material to work with.

But 2fps is going to look a lot different from a still taken 10 seconds or so apart and ramped up to 24fps.

And to make something like the film above you need to have serious editing chops and a fantastic head for sound design. That piece is incredible.
 
Certainly the movement and the editing, etc. is a huge plus, but just with VFR footage at 2 fps you have the post capability to alter the speed much faster and just use 1 frame every 10 seconds of real time if desired - different parts could even be interwoven at different speeds to suit the action. Not saying it is anywhere near as nice as a hyper lapse, but it has its uses.
 
Lets get some timelapse love as well: any GH4 timelapse shooters reading this thread, what settings have worked well for you? day shoots vs night shoots
