I know other people within the industry that only did a little college and their working along just fine.

This may be the case, but it's going to be hard either way.

Plus in the film industry people mostly care about your work experience, which is kind of a pain in the ass to get a job because its a catch 22 situation in most cases.

True, however, I think you are missing something about school here.

It also depends on what kind of job you wanted. That's why you need to network and maybe some day someone will help you out.

Ok, look, the point of going to college is not just for experience or education. Although if that's your only reason it's a damn worthy one. The reason to go to school is like this: An employer looks at your resume (no matter what the job is) and sees that you have a degree. You know what they're thinking? This guy can set a goal and accomplish it. That's what it comes down to. If it's between you and another guy and you tell him...
I found college to be the biggest waste of time...for me. That's why I only did a half assed two years [and dropped out]...
...you think he's gonna pick you? You set a goal and when it got too hard, you quit. Why shouldn't he think you'll do the same thing to him when he gives you a project and it starts to get tough for you?

The point is, going to college does more for you then you think. I have also noticed that the biggest antagonists of college are the ones that didn't go or at least finish. I spent 6 years of my life in college. It was hard, and believe me, no one knows how frustrating it is to be in a "film program" then I do. But, do I regret getting my BA, HELL NO!

But if your going there for filmmaking drop out now.

Don't be telling people that, or at least no one should take your advice, you're a quitter, you don't even know. It's foolish to take advice from someone who doesn't know what he's talking about.

As far as whether to go to school or not, I don't care, do what you all want. I know many people have been very sucessful without furthuring their schooling. However, if you could get more knowledge of the world and show others you can take a tough situation and make it work, then why not do it? I went to school with a full time job and a wife and kids, it was dang tough, but I have become a better person for it, so... take what you want from that. Quitters.

Agreed wholeheartedly with the whole post. I got married two years after starting school, and had a kid two years later, and spent seven years in school al together.

The day of my graduation was the proudest moment of my life, no doubt about it. Nothing else comes even close.

And when a potential employer looks at your resume, not only you can impress them with accomplishing a set goal - you can also entertain them with fun school stories.

Dude school kicks ass. Live it; love it. In 10 years (as Dave says) you're gonna look back and think '**** that was easy'.

Serious. Dude. Relish and Rue my man.

Right on! I often hear kids say how they hate school, don't want to go there and stuff and I'm like... Dude, school was awesome, some of the best times of my life. Sure it might seem tough at times with the amount of classes and homework these days (though, I've never had problems with any - heck, it's a given, just deal with it and have fun), but it will never be that easy after that. Live carefree and enjoy it while you can. Once the school is over, you'll be missing it, even the teachers you thought you hated. You'll begin to appreciate what they, what school gave you.

Today was second day of school...this year is gonna be a breeeze for me...except Business Law and Spanish....

My teachers are all madd laid back...they barely assign homework...they only thing they ask for your attentino and some taking notes for important things. They dont care that much if you talk really really quitely next to your friend...but after a while they notice and they yell at you.
All my teachers said they made up a new way of teaching..they organize things so easily...and im somewhat...actually not organized at all..and its easy for me to keep track of what homework and class work i have..they give us the whole syllibuss for the week..then we know wat to expect.

But Business Law.....RAAAAAAAAAAAPPPPE!!!! Sooo much homework and studying andpaying attention...same with Spanish...upp tight teachers who yell at you if you clear your throat.
Plus...the only way ill get a new camera in June is if i get atleast a minium of straight B's in everysubject...my dad was like...ILL MAKE A COMPRIMISE..YOU WORK FOR MEE NOW!! BLLAAHH!!! so i gatta pass those two classes somehow...its gona be butt..but i gatta somehow do it...unless one of you guys wants to help me out with Business Law and Spanish 2. haha

btw...if i didnt mention...MADDD CHIKKKSS!!! ASL;KDHFASDHFA CRAZZY
i talked to this one girl today....i started sweating it to the max....i was wearing two shirts...i started sweating on my arms....it went thru the first shirt and second....it was madd embarassing, but she didnt notice it...i went to the bathroom and like hid in there for like 20 min to cool off...but i did get her number thou....muuhahahahha

In every man's life, there are two sad periods of time:

High school, when every chick that will give you what you want looks attractive.

And somewhere between 40 and your death, when every woman below 35 looks attractive.

Hahahaha!

Great thread :)

Couldn't agree more with JoeFowler on the topic of school. I'm in my second year of college and planning a good six more for a masters degree. The number of employment options that open up when you get a degree far outweighs anything gained from not going IMO.

JoeFowler, your right that it would be hard either way you tried to get into the film industry. I'm not trying to say that one way is easier than the next. What I'm trying to say is that you don't have to waste your time and money on school. You could and end up in the same place. But not everything works for everyone the same way.

I understand the point of college. I just hated learning at the speed of all the retards there. Maybe it was the school I went to and that's why I have developed my dislike for school. I'm sure a degree in something could help you out on a job interview. But also getting an early start on things could help you out even more. My thing is I hate wasting my time because its the only thing I can't get back. Too me, school is a waste of time because if I want to learn something I will learn it on my own by going out and doing it or reading about it. I have met so many people down in the LA area that have gone to film school and don't have anything even close to what I've got. Now that makes me think that my way is much better and much cheaper. Plus while I was learning I was getting paid for it, not the other way around. I would much rather have that situation and I believe that other people would also. BTW, my work experience and my drive to get the job and to do the best I can is what got me my job at Warner Bros., DreamWorks, Disney and 20th Century Fox. Can you make that bost. Now onto my next point...

For you to try and know me from what I've posted here is a huge mistake. Also you calling me a quitter isn't fair. I had to work my ass off to get to where I am now. Its not like I was just handed this job, I had to fight for it and through all the catch 22's in the industry. I have very high goals and I know they will be hard to make them a reality. But I don't even think about quitting. Because I know I will get there. Its not a question of might or maybe or some other excuse other people come up with. I know.

People don't have to listen to me...your right. But they should if they don't want to paid the ridiculous school fees and to waste their time. They should take their money that they would use for school and buy a DVX. Then spend all those tens of thousands of dollars on making short films and learning from that.

Oh and I always know what I'm talking about. Thanks for the insults Joe.

You have to understand that billions of times I have heard other dvxuser members say that college is a waste of time when they haven't graduated or even gone themselves. I am not trying to hurt your feeling, it just pisses me off that someone can be so strong in an opinion about something they have only experienced to a small degree.

If your way is working then it shouldn't matter what I say, and there is no need to get so offended, I just want you to see my point as well. I guess what I'm saying is, everyone here that put all that time, effort and money into graduating from school can know what it's like to be frustrated with it. However, how can someone know what it's like to have the degree if you don't have one? How can you even know it was a waste of time?

This debate is so... "dead ended" because everyone on the "I hate school side" doesn't go and everyone on the "I love school" side has a degree. (There are exceptions, no need to point them out, but the majority seems to go this way.) That's all.

Again, sorry to hurt your feelings, that's never my intention. And good luck with all you got going on, Warner Bros, DreamWorks, Disney and 20th Century Fox... you have a lot of coffee to get... just kidding!

Joe, the reason why you have heard that from billions of DVXuser members that haven't gone or graduated is because they saw how pointless it was, for them and myself, to get a piece of paper that means so much to other people. I don't know if that's how all those other people feel, I'm just expressing my view.

I get offened from someone calling me names just as anyone else would. How you you like it? I'm sure you would find it rather offensive if I started calling you a quitter. That fact is you haven't even look on the other side of the coin of this argument at all. I'm sure it doesn't make you feel good about yourself when I say the thing you spent 6 years of your life doing I consider to be a waste of time and money. But that's just the way I see it and I'm sure others do as well.

BTW, I've never made coffee for anyone...popcorn, yes.

dude, blckhawk, i feel you, man. i started junior year in high school on wednesday (the freshmen got tuesday all to themselves.) but yeah, sophomore year was rough.

luckily, i took math science and spanish 9th and 10th grade so this year i dropped all three, and it's awesome. the only crappy part is i decided to take advanced placement english, so we had homework over the summer to "keep us fresh." only problem is it doesnt help if you do it all 3 days before school starts. but i'm in like 3 video classes, so it makes up for it.

our schedule's messed up tho. we have "A" and "B" days, four 1:25 classes a day. and i'm in second lunch, which means i go to three classes and then get to lunch at 12:45. plus we only get half an hour.

but worst of all... we have a severe lack of hot chicks here. there's waaay too many that either THINK they're hot or just.... *shudder* but i got this hot exchange student from norway in my u.s.history class, and with her accent, A;'ALKSDHG;LAS;DFKHA'

Do you go to a small school? I remember hearing that from all the people who came from small towns my freshmen year of college. I graduated with 950 other people, so let's just say the view was splendid all the time.

Going to a big school is great. I love it. A lot.
