Schoeps Shotgun

Played with the Schoeps CMIT 5U today. Haven't played back my recording yet, but I must say I was amazed at how lightweight the mic is. For those who have not seen or heard about this mic yet, it's a shotgun mic that is less prone to coloration of off axis sound like most other shotgun mics. I tested it out at an audio expo today, but it was not in ideal conditions so I'll be renting one to try out more carefully. The light weight and the color almost make it feel like a toy, but of course the sound it captures proves otherwise. Very cool mic. Can't spend the $1700 for it right now, but will consider it in the future. You should really try to get your hands on one and see how cool it is.

Also, saw Pro Tools 7 demo today. Some interesting stuff. I wish I could afford a D Command.

Hey if you can please post a recording. If anybody else gets their hands on one take a recorder with you just so we can hear it. If possible include another clip of your voice on some other mic... for comparison.

I know this doesn't prove anything, but I'm curious about the character of the mic... if it sounds like a narrower mk41 or if it's less crisp and more warm... or what gun it sounds like. I've been told that it's like a Neumann, but I haven't heard it for myself yet.

It's super-light because the shell is aluminum... which burns my ass. Why not Ti at this price?

EDIT: I'm sure everybody knows this, but the reason a 416 feels so heavy is 'cause it's thick brass that you could drive a nail with!

I've been really shocked that there haven't been any A/B posts with this and a Sennheiser 416 yet. Someone has got to get one posted (hint, hint Dave!)

Sounds like a cmc641.

Bummer that means the price won't be coming down anytime soon... and the demand will probably keep 'em out of stock.:cheesy:

Since the cmc6 is already modular... I wonder why they didn't release this as a cap?

-psst, that's a rhetorical question.

Have you seen the CMIT? I wouldn't want to put an interference tube on the end of a mount like the cmc641. oops, soory, that's a rehtorical answer. :)

As for Matt's burned ass and the aluminum/titanium debate.....so how long have you been a metallugist?

Yes it really does sound like a cmc641 with very sweet shoulders that, like the cmc641 just fade as the source goes off axis.

Sorry if I sound like a whiner about the aluminum construction. I'm not trying to bash on the Schoeps. I thought if ANYBODY would have liked to see it in Ti... it would... um... do I really have to say it?:)

My guess is that it's a 6063-T5 tube, not because they saved money off the cost of going 7075 (and lost some strength) but because 6063 takes an anodized finish really well. I've been making my light shells out of 3003-H14, but I'm planning to change that because I don't think they need to be that hard and the 90 degree bends can sometimes crack (during construction, not later... don't panic folks... if one cracked it got trashed). The internal substrate is 6063 and that's been fine for this but it will break on too tight of a radius also. That was a bummer because I wanted to do a minimalist frame on the initial light design, but had to go with an extrusion because I couldn't work the 6063.

There's some other stuff I'm working on with 6063 and 6061 tubes (in T6 of course) and I'm happy with the strenth to weight in the 6061-T6, but I might make my own versions in 7075-T6... wink wink.

All I know is when I buy my metal that the Ti tubes are cut very precisely and you have to ask for the cost of everything... whereas all the aluminum is cataloged so I know the cost ahead of time... Oh and when I rap something on the Ti tube it goes "dink" and the aluminum tubes go "piiiiiiiiiiing"... of course they are several feet long.

Okay now you won't hear any more negative comments from me... which I didn't think were all that negative anyway, but I guess it's a touchy subject... or I'm spoiled by the modularity of the AKG ULS which can support a shotgun cap that's 12.5" long and I thought Schoeps could do the same thing with a much shorter, much lighter tube.

I've got a good friend locally that has an extensive Schoeps kit and I'll have to get a better look at the mount the next time I see him.

I hope nobody misinterprets my earlier comments... I'm sure it's probably the best shotgun you can get.

It sounds like a cmc641 but with a longer reach. It's sweet spot is further out. Very similar to the Neumann KMR81

What about a comparison between the Schoeps CMIT 5u and the Neumann KMR81?

The KMR81 has the advantage that I could actually buy it now, whereas the CMIT won't be available for about another 3 months.

As far as I can see both have much more even polar patterns than other shotguns. But who has used them both and can tell us about it?

(Oleg? :) I remember you mentioned pulling the KMR once but I can't find the thread, because the search function says that "KMR 81" is too trivial.)

how about cmit vs cs-3e. quite different mics, i guess, but also both in a price bracket where most people can probably only afford one of the two...
