Schoeps MK21 for outdoor?

I would go with an MK41.

MK21 is a wide cardioid, almost an omni, you would never have the required isolation needed.

Even the cardiod MK4 is to wide and has too much bass. Hypercardioid or shotgun microphones are the best for outdoor sound work.

yea, I'm getting an MK41, but that's for indoor dialogue. So would I be better off just getting something like the Rode NTG-3 for dialogue outdoors then ya think?

In what situation/environment would the MK21 be my best option?

I won't use the MK21 to record dialog in any situation. It's a music recording microphone.

Like I said, to wide of a directivity to isolate dialog from ambient noise outdoor or reverberation indoor.

I you want a very good shotgun microphone for exteriors and stay with the Schoeps color, go for a CMIT-5U or Super CMIT.

Cheers.

I knew it! That's what I've been trying to tell this dude, but he refuses to sell me the MK41 without the MK21. I'd be getting it for a good price, but like I told him, I have absolutely no use for the MK21 & I see how long it takes people to sell these online. But thanks for your help though, you confirmed what I was already thinking. Have a good one..

Main mics and section spot mics when recording a symphony orchestra. Depending on the acoustic of the space, main mics when recording chamber music. Depending on the acoustic, they can be outstanding with choral music.

I don't see a place for a sub-cardioid mic in recording dialog. Especially if you don't have a cut 1 module with it.

Based on your questions, you are inexperienced. Instead of throwing away on expensive gear (which you don't have a clue about already) will have the microphones.. and more importantly... place them appropriately.
