GH4 Schneider Variogon 10-100 f/1.8 Test

Center image quality looks great, but things really fall off further away.

Have you tried using the ETC mode with this lens?

Sweet.

Just to get this straight, the image circle of the C-Mount is large enough to shoot in 4k? Other websites mention that one needs to shoot in ETC mode.

None of my C-mount lenses give me a full image in 4K (lots of vignette). ETC is the only way to go for C-Mount still.

Hi everyone!

I just got the same lens, but it has some kind of PL mount ???
How can I get it on a micro 4/3 with a c-mount ???

Thanks!

Ok here is where I have a problem with C mount lenses. They require the use of ETC. ETC uses the center portion of the sensor which means you do not gain any of the advantage of the larger sensor. You are basically using a 2/3" 1920x1080 sensor with the reduced sensitivity that one normally gets when using ETC. These C mount lenses tend to be brighter at f1.8 but since the sensor is no longer as sensitive you end up with noise that is worse than using a f4.0 lens with the full sensor. So in reality you don't gain much at all in terms of low light. Sure you get a power zoom but the softness is worse than any lens I have ever seen.

ETC on the GH cameras really starts to look ugly at ISO400. This means you end up with less usable range to work with than you would be shooting with a f2.8 m43 zoom lens. If these thing could fill the sensor it would be a totally different story but alas they do not. ETC can be a serious reduction of quality and low light capability and any lens that has to use it is really at a big disadvantage.

Now if this is just for a unique look then that is cool but I would never consider these a solid production tool if quality is a concern. You would honestly get much better results from a good 1/3" or 1/2" video camera with a built in 12x or 20x zoom lens designed to work with the camera at optimal resolution.

Hi,
I got this lens for 5$.
I have some other c-mount lenses that cost me about the same (5-30$).
I also have a camera that cost me about 50$, so I really can't bother about the quality. If you want great quality, buy a 2.000$ setup.
Yes, the ETC reduces the image quality, but you can use some of these lenses to get nice effects.
You can get really nice pictures in sommer when the light is strong.
The only thing that bothers me is that the extender costs me more than the lens!

I also have the problem that on my lens there is no screw thread, but a mount that looks like a PL-mount. Does anybody know the variogon 10-100 with such a mount? What mount could it possibly be? Thanks!
