Hi guys,

Downloaded the demo of dvmaker and found the following suggested setting info for the dvx100:

SHUTTER = OFF (1/50th). 1/60th sec may also be used, but only to reduce flicker with florescent or arc lighting in 60Hz countries (like the USA).

ATW (Auto Tracking White Balance) = OFF

SCENE FILE:
DETAIL LEVEL = -3 (see note 1)
CHROMA LEVEL = 0
CHROMA PHASE = 0
COLOR TEMP = 0
MASTER PED = -6 (see note 2)
A. IRIS LEVEL = -1
GAMMA = CINE-LIKE
SKIN TONE DTL = OFF
MATRIX = NORMAL
V DETAIL FREQ = THIN
PROGRESSIVE = 24P(ADV) for NTSC / 25P for PAL models

CAMERA SETUP:
ASPECT CONV = NORM (4:3)
SETUP = 0%
SW MODE:
ATW = OFF

RECORDING SETUP:
REC SPEED = SP
AUDIO REC = 16BIT

DISPLAY SETUP:
ZEBRA DETECT 2 = 100%
ZEBRA DETECT 1

Can you guys suggest what the settings would be for a dvx100a? I've posted this on the dvfilm forum, but nobody has replied. They're definitely not like you guys-- I can always rely on you guys for some quick feedback! ;D

by the way, is anyone really using this software?

Re: scene setting for dvfilm maker

You could do the same settings with the 100A. However, I don't necessarily agree with the -6 on the pedestal. I think this just crushes the blacks.

You might want to tell the group more about what it is you are going to do with the footage, and you may get more suggestions. Are you going to film? Just going for the film look for a video finish. If this latter is true I would not leave it in THIN but rather switch to thick.

Tell us more and maybe we can be more insightful.

Best,

Jan

Re: scene setting for dvfilm maker

Thanks guys for the feedback--just checked the dvfilm forum and still not a single reply (a lot of reads, though)!

Jan,
I just want a filmed look, and final output is progressive dvd. I realize that the settings on the camera are just one of many factors involved with shooting something that looks like film, but I figure at least I can set those correctly from the outset (and then do my best to light and move the camera in a filmic way).

Thanks again guys for always being so responsive! ;D

Re: scene setting for dvfilm maker

Where do you find this demo from dvfilmaker that you referred to?

Re: scene setting for dvfilm maker

I would happily agree with these settings because they are very close
to what I use after long long tests with progressive HDTV displays.
though there are 2 minor differences :

detail level : -4
masterped. : - 3

with these settings I found it very easy in postproduction to get a pleasant look on plasma and TFT monitors

Re: scene setting for dvfilm maker

Mine too,

-SCENE FILE MENU-
DL -4
VDL -4
DC +5
CL 0
CP -4
CT 0
MP -6
AIL 0
GAMMA CINE-LIKE
MATRIX CINE-LIKE
SKIN TONE 0FF
VDF THIN
PROGRESSIVE 24PADV (ALWAYS ;D)

I adjust COLOR TEMP (CT) down (-) when shooting overcast to keep colors rich and warm (personal preference), but could also go the other way if cooler look is needed.

As to the Master Pedestal set in minus number... This to me makes the colors much richer and more full, I also like pure black on blacks not some shade of black and keeping MP at -3 to -7 will make that happen. Always shoot SQUEEZE MODE as everything goes to 24p DVD and I see no reason for 4:3 DVDs.

Lots of choices, just as it should be. The top 2 DETAIL LEVEL and VERTICAL DETAIL LEVEL kept in the minus range really keep playback on large screen TV (not HDTV) smooth yet clear, left a 0, images are much more coarse and less pleasing to the eye.

BTW - I am nowhere near done trying settings. I find I like these very well, but thats not to say it couldn't be even better with some adjustments.

Re: scene setting for dvfilm maker

One of the perks of playing with the detail level is in dealing with moire patterns. Both thick and thin settings bring out differnt vibrations, so play with them depending on the situation.

I had been using my pedestal at -8. For situations where i could control the light, this worked well. However, when shooting outdoors I have to stop down for the highlights and everything dark becomes crushed. So i am sticking with -2 for a while to see how that looks.
