Scene Setting 30p

I am looking for some recommendations for scene file setting for 30p. I have yet to shot anything in 30p or 24p. I primarily shot weddings. I want to start shooting in 30p and eventually 24p. The DVX100A comes with standard settings for setting for 60i and 24p, but none for 30p. What scene setting for 30p are you guys using?

Re: Scene Setting 30p

I normally use the same settings as I would for 24P. I just change the actual frame rate, while still on my F5 setting...this way, you still get cine-gamma, and all the "film-like" features you would with 24P.

Why don't you just shoot 24P though? It's better ;)

Re: Scene Setting 30p

We do all the of our wedding ceremonies as, at least a two camera shoot. Unfortunately the other camera's we have are Sony PD-150's and VX2000's. Now as we all know the PD-150 and the VX2000's are great cameras with exceptional low light capability (much better then that of the DVX100A) but they don't do 24p. We want to take our product up a notch so we want to start shooting in progressive scan. We both edit primarily in Liquid Editions 5.5, and at this time Liquid can't handle 24pa. So until I become proficient in Vegas (Multiple frame rates) and we can get another DVX100A we figure the best thing is to shoot in 30p. We both wish to learn Vegas it look like an excellent product. Fortunately for us we are booked for at least two weddings for every weekend from now until mid November. (love is in the air Pennsylvania, fellas and ladies.) So we don't have the time to hit the learning.

Re: Scene Setting 30p

As far as I know...the PD150 and VX2000 can't do 30P, only 15P...so won't shooting with a DVX in 30P and a VX2000 in 60i (or 15P) look different, too?

Re: Scene Setting 30p

30p is easier to match with 60i than 24p is, and it still retains a film-like look.

For a better match, you should use 60i, but a judicious use -- using 30p for all the most important beauty shots -- could work well, especially if edited well.

Vegas is worth taking the time to get to know.

Re: Scene Setting 30p

Wayne, you might try shooting 30P with your DVX100a and shoot at 1/30 sec. shutter speed on your other cameras. I think you'll find a closer match, especially in terms of motion blur. I've done this and it's not a bad match considering the other cameras don't shoot actual 30P. Good luck-

Re: Scene Setting 30p

I know the PD-150 has a progressive scan mode. I am probably wrong but I thought if your camera does 60i, if you switch it to progressive scan you were automatically working in 30p? Someone correct me. But know one has really answered my real question. What scene file setting are you using for your 30p set up?

Re: Scene Setting 30p

The PD150 has a 15-fps progressive-scan mode (15P). It does not do 30P. Very few, if any, cameras do 30P other than the DVX (at one point there was a Canon Elura and another Canon model that did 30P, but they discontinued the progressive mode on it). The DVX may be the only camera around that does 30P.

Re: Scene Setting 30p

Ok, I took a look at the manual for the PD-150, and Mike you are correct the PD-150 shots at 15p when switched to progressive scan. So in my above post I am wrong. Ok, I have learned something new. Just call me Dumb*ass for the dumb*ss assumption.

Re: Scene Setting 30p

My scene file for 30P:
Detail level- +4
V detail level- 0
Detail coring- +2
Chroma level- +3
Chroma phase- 0
Color temp- 0
Master pedestal- -1
A.Iris level- 0
Gamma- cine-like_V
Matrix- Cine-like
Skin tone dtl- off
V detail freq- thick

Hope this might get you a start.

Re: Scene Setting 30p

Thank You, Barry. I finally found that to be true. And we did some test.

Hey JBN thanks for the settings I wil try them.

I am still interested to see what scene file setting all of you DVXusers out there are having success with.

Re: Scene Setting 30p

I took the "Sparkle" scene file and switched it to 30p. Seemed to work well.

A lot of this depends on what you're trying to do in your project, though.

Re: Scene Setting 30p

Something to consider. Shoot in 24P on your DVX, and use DVFilm Tools to convert your 60i Sony footage to 24P. It's inexpensive and from what I have heard it does a pretty good job.

I am considering doing the same. I can get some killer sharp images with my DVC200 w/Canon 19x lens and shallower depth of field, when needed. I want to test out the DVFilm tool to see how well it's conversion does on this footage when matching up with my DVX100A. I just haven't had the time to try out their demo yet.

Just a thought.

Re: Scene Setting 30p

Andrew-
Please post results if you end up testing the software. I would love to see the outcome.

Re: Scene Setting 30p

JBN, I like your idea of the Sony's shooting at shutter speed 1/30 to match motion blur of Dvx but don't you also feel that your Vert. Detail frequency should be set to thin? I think it would also help match the Sony's a little better!

Re: Scene Setting 30p

Definitely not -- the Sony at 1/30th is using field-doubling, so it gets 1/2 the resolution of a normal frame. The DVX on thick is delivering the full resolution of a regular frame, or twice the resolution that the Sony will give. If you put the DVX on thin mode it'd be three times the resolution of the Sony. Using 1/30th on the Sony would match the motion blur of a DVX on 1/30th, but the resolution is going to be very different between the two.

Re: Scene Setting 30p

As ususal, Barry is absolutely correct. I only suggested the 1/30th shutter speed as a closer approximation to the motion blur of the DVX. Of course the resolution is going to be much higher in the DVX, but if you already had it perfectly captured , you wouldn't be in "how do I fix it now" mode. But hey, we've all been there....stuff happens. ;) If your content is doing it's job, then hopefully the differences between cameras will be negligable. Good luck-

Re: Scene Setting 30p

Setting the Sony's shutter speed to 1/30 will cut your vertical resolution in half. (you are fitting 30 samples into 60 fields, so two fields are going to be the same.) I have heard people call this "stealth progressive" mode because it essentially gives a 30p image, but with half of the vertical resolution. (Or, if you prefer, think of it as a 30p image with vertical detail set to "thicker than thick!").

Re: Scene Setting 30p

It would probably be best to shoot with both at a shutter of 1/30 to get your motion to match, and then blur the DVX footage slightly in post...
