Scene Files

Was wondering if anyone has any scene files that they're excited about currently, I feel like I haven't heard much on the subject since Pana put out the GH4 Natural file. Always curious to see what everyone else is liking. I'm running factory Scene 6 with some minor tweaks but nothing crazy.

I've done a video discussing my understanding (which I make no claims to be flawless!) of color correction on the DVX200. I've also added a run through of a recent scene file I've created this week. The aim of this scene file is to change the factory Scene 1 profile to 'correct' certain areas that I find strange (personal taste, of course). It's mainly looking at changes to skin tones. The start of the video is filmed using this profile with no changes whatsoever so you can decide if you think it's worth further inspection :)

Working with Color Profiles on the DVX200

The scene file is available for download in the description so you don't have to watch the video at all if you prefer. I don't want this to just be bloody YouTube promotion. I just love playing around with this camera!

Thanks,

Torsten.

Thanks for putting this together! Much appreciated! I'm going to experiment with it today.

QUESTION: Can you explain a bit more about the process you used to determine the changes? Was it all "by eye", so more subjective? Did you use the color chart in the process? etc.

Was it all "by eye", so more subjective? Did you use the color chart in the process?

To start with, I was shooting a color chart, taking this into Resolve, getting it to make the changes as it saw fit and then noting how much each colour was off by. Unfortunately this just ended up in tweaking to death to a point where the profile looked good under one situation but absolutely terrible in others. It also made me realise, as I mention in the vid, that the out of box colour on the DVX200 is actually pretty accurate...it's just not to my taste and I found that I was getting various artifacts that I wanted to get rid of.

By that point, I had learned enough to reset everything, change the few things I knew I needed to change by eye and then make a few phase adjustments to bring colours back in line with the colour chart. I have tried this under tungsten at about 2600K and daylight at quite a cool 5000K. That seems to work best for me but obviously a white / gray card will let you check that for sure.

Reading on just this forum shows that everyone has very different taste as to what colour is right or preferred. That's a good thing as it usually gives your work 'your look'. :) I actually prefer to shoot with this camera in V Log. It works beautifully then with a simple white balance. But sometimes it's just not the right thing to do. The internal capture can look excellent too (see here). I shot this quick test the other morning for something different but it uses this profile and the internal 8-bit capture.

Torsten, that's a great video! I'm going to try out your scene file tonight.

Thanks Jason. I hope it looks good when you load it up :) . Just checked out your website. Very nice!

I've been waiting for a lull at work so I can tweak a profile specifically for low light. I find the different gamma modes seem to affect the sensitivity to light - but I could be wrong - anyone got any ideas on this?
