Hello All
I have a new client who is directing and editing on the Avid .
Output will be WEB and DVD....
He is debating between the available scene files of the dvx100a .
That being 24p advanced and 60i
I have told him about the "film look" in 24p adavnced
which he seems to be less than impressed with
based on the standard monitor display we have used for demo footage .
I have explained he can do 60i and get more '" video like " detail
and has a better chance of achieving slow motion shots .
I have also metioned the one stop light gain while shoting in 60i....
Have I left anything out?
Again ,He plans to out put to WEB and DVD
Any refrence would be appreciated to:
Your opinions or

past threads (on this forum ) for the Topics which deals with this often repeated question of file 1 vs file 6 for the dvx100a .
Thanks

Keep in mind that web streaming is a progressive format - that's what those trailers look so good on the QuickTime site. A happy compromise between 24p and 30i is 30p. You can still create a progressive DVD as well as have a nice compressed streaming format for the web.

Doing native 24fps is also advantageous for the web since it reduces the bandwidth needs by 20% compared to progressive 30fps.

I was wrong to call scene one 60 i it is 30 i?
oh well back to the manual .

60i, 30i, AAAGGHHHHH!!!!!!

It's a Panasonic/Sony Marketing nightmare that got us into this mess. When Panasonic release 720p/60, (progressive) Sony had high frame rate envy for the number 60 instead of 30. So they started calling everything 60i (60 FIELDS interlace). But that makes things very confusing since the nomenclature format was always:

resolution/frame structure/FRAME rate.

as in 1080p/24 means a resolution of 1920 x 1080, progressive at 24 FRAME PER SECOND

1080i/30 means a resolution of 1920 x 1080, progressive at 30 FRAME PER SECOND

and of course 1080p/23.976 and 1080i/29.97 are the fractional version.

So now you get 1080i/60 which is 30 frame per second INTERLACE which is the same format as the old nomenclature of 1080i/30...

But such is the marketing life -

Great info so far Thanks ......
at the risk of be tiresome
My prospective client has acess to an avid system ( I dont know which one) and he says he has heard of problems with some versions of avid systems and the 24p advanced file from the panasonic dvx100a .
I told him that in 24p there used to be a sound sync issue which was solved in 24p advanced .
Is there anything else coming out of the avid end of parameters to know about?
AVID EDIT SYSTEM used to edit film done in the dvx100a 24padvanced file ."?
details facts conformation issues and oh yes any tip on setting the
the internal time code for the dvx100a would be appreciated do these editors want something beyond all zeros at the head of a project ?

Thanks for any info or refrence on line
Cheers

It depends on which version of the Avid you are referring to. ADVANCED pulldown was introduced way after Meridian hardware was designed, so those versions do not support ADVANCED pulldown but will do NORMAL.

Adrenaline will do either.

Xpress Pro will do NORMAL and ADVANCED with 5.1

Xpress Pro versions 4.x and later will all handle ADVANCED capture.

Adrenaline and Xpress Pro offer Audio delay feature during capture right in the capture window. Select 1-10 frames as needed.

All versions of Xpress Pro 4.8 and earlier need a Mojo to output DV as NTSC from a 23.976 project

Xpress Pro versions 5.0 and later can all output NTSC DV directly over FireWire without a Mojo.

Hope this helps.

If I shot with 24p advanced, which project setting should I choose when setting that option up on Avid Xpress Pro (I'm using 4.6)? 23.976p, 24p, or maybe 30i even?

I would assume I will want to output to tape at 24p advanced as well, but would like the option to put it to tape at regular NTSC 30i and such. Any help please?

You will either be in a 23.976p project or 30i (29.97). Not 24p. The camera only records at 23.976 or 29.97fps.

If you edit in a 30i project, you will have no control over the type of cadence you have for output. You are capturing all the frames and fields and that's the way they stay.

In a 23.976 project you can come in with ADVANCED or NORMAL (Xpress Pro 5.2 or later) and be editing at native 23.976. In this scenario you have the choice of what type of cadence you want to have when outputting to NTSC - NORMAL or ADVANCED. You will want NORMAL if this is your final output ready for air or otherwise. ADVANCED if you ever want to capture again in a DV system that supports it - bust since 5.2 or later supports both, that is no longer a big issue.

ADVANCED or NORMAL on output is determined by the Cadence setting in the "Film and 24p" settings.
