Scene File Setup and 24p versus 24pa

So good news, I got my DVX and have started to adjust my settings. I shot yesterday with the camera with straight out of the box setting and was quite dissapointed but last night I went over to the article Dashwood and others had done. Things look way better, alot less noise in the blacks.

Back to the age old question:
My finished video's will be going out to Digital Betacam and DVD. I never intend to go out to film.

Am I best ot shoot in 24p or 24pa.
I am using FCP 3 and or Vegas 4 not 4.ob. Wanting to edit 29.97

Just for the curious here are my Scene File Settings for F5 and F6:

Detal level -4
Chroma Phase -4
Master ped -8
Gamma Cine-like
Matrix Cine-Like
V Detail Freq Thick

Running Camera Setup at 0

Re: Scene File Setup and 24p versus 24pa

If you're wanting to edit 29.97 then you should shoot 24p normal. Also, to upgrade Vegas 4 to 4.d is free (actually I think 4.e is out now, I'm still running .d). Then you can edit in 24p if you ever want to.

Those settings are very close to the default settings I use, although I like a little more detail at times. I also keep the PED a little higher and crush the blacks to my liking in post, I figure it's better to get more detail at the front end in case I ever need it in the backend.

Re: Scene File Setup and 24p versus 24pa

Thanks, Good point about crushing the blacks in post, nice to have a little extra latitude.

Re: Scene File Setup and 24p versus 24pa

I actually jack the detail levels up. Usually looks great and it's wonderful for focusing purposes. However I find that if there are busy patterns in the background that really makes the picture look busy. If that makes sense. ;D

Re: Scene File Setup and 24p versus 24pa

adding detail is fine if you're staying in video - you wouldn't want to add too much though if you were outputting to an HD set - all those SD edges get enlarged to HD, rather than letting the set itself add its own (in native HD)

Re: Scene File Setup and 24p versus 24pa

exactly.

i think the best setting is to set the detail at 0 with the "thin" v detail setting. No edge enhancement, and enough sharpness...and it looks great on all types of TVs.

I did some testing and the best "neutral" master ped setting is -3 to -5.
It hits 0 ire level with the iris closed. With -6 or lower, you loose shadow info for sure.

Re: Scene File Setup and 24p versus 24pa

I'd even consider shooting with less detail enhancement, depending on the output. I've started shooting with it all the way at the bottom (-7), with thin detail mode, and it looks great. Still sharp, and yet soft. More organic IMHO - and my master ped is (like yours, Antoine) at around -3 to -5.
