Scene File Settings DVX100A

Hi.... I'm new to the forum. I bought a the DVX100A about a month ago... LOVE the image quality thus far... But have miles to go in terms of understanding where, when and how to use the numerous scene file settings for different situations. The practice helps, but I learn a lot quicker when I reference tutorials... Any links, books, specific advice much appreciated....

I'm primarily shooting projects for television and DVD's. Currently editing on Media 100, soon to switch FCP.

By the way.... This is a great site.. I look forward to learning more from the forum....
Cheers,
JDH

Re: Scene File Settings DVX100A

I would suggest doing a search of the forum. There have been NUMEROUS threads about the very thing you are asking. Don't put too much stock into the scene files, the bigger hurdle is learning all the smaller settings that you can tweek.

Welcome to the board. :)

Re: Scene File Settings DVX100A

I'm working on a book/dvd combo to explain everything I can think of about the DVX, and obviously settings will be a big part of it. I'll have before & afters, and descriptions of when & why you'd want to set them for specific circumstances, etc. Shooting starts tomorrow, so finished product in the next few weeks...

Re: Scene File Settings DVX100A

Barry... Excellent!!!! I look forward to your book/dvd combo. Just my two cents -- now that I have letterbox, cine-like and 24p option, I'm tempted to use these settings all the time. (I'm shooting primarily promotional programs for TV and marketing DVD's) You might consider a section that perhaps discusses how best to use the letterbox, 16 by 9 and full screen options. I'm creating a marketing video now that's filled with a mixture of the beautiful architecture images shot with the DVX (letterbox) and existing archived footage in standard 4X3 29-frame rate(Panasonic DVCPro)... How acceptable is this presentation method (going back and forth b/n letterbox and full screen)..I use the letterbox because our Media 100 won't allow 16-by-9 and 4-by-3 in the same timeline :). The draft premiere was a big hit, but the committee doesn't seem too hard to please and I want this to look as professional as possible.

Thanks,
Jeff

How acceptable is this presentation method
Hey, if your audience accepts it, it's acceptable! From what you describe you're doing the right thing: your video display device is 4:3, so if you want the widescreen look in a 4:3 video, letterbox is the best way to go about it.

The DVD will likely have a section on most of the FAQ's: squeeze/anamorphic/letterbox, strobing in 24P, film vs. DVX, DVX vs. HDV, mini35 footage, DOF techniques, and a description of the settings and examples of looks that can be created, and why you'd want to use certain settings under certain circumstances, etc... depends on how much we can get shot in the time frame we have allocated! ;) The book part will be able to go into more detail, but I figure a) nothing teaches quite like seeing it in action, and b) nobody's going to read the whole book part, are they? Nobody reads their owner's manual even... maybe in the middle I'll slip in a story about Flopsy Bunny's Trip To The Market, just to see if anyone gets that far! ;D

Re: Scene File Settings DVX100A

I'll read the book part! Incidently, maybe you should have Flopsy the Bunny give helpful tips and tricks throughout the sections.

You could some poses and have little speech boxes express little things like that.

Re: Scene File Settings DVX100A

Guys, I can't draw!  I couldn't draw blood if I used a machete.  I can barely draw a blank.

(besides, the DVD host who will be giving the helpful tips & tricks is a professional spokesmodel and beauty queen, Mrs. Nevada 2003!)  So we may not need Flopsy after all...

Re: Scene File Settings DVX100A

HAH! This is exciting. I'm glad for this. When can we expect the first rounds to be produced?

Re: Scene File Settings DVX100A

Speaking of the manual, a good thing to do would be to attach it somewhere on this site. I like the manual, Barry my manual looks like your Anamorphic adapter guide now.
Staples can book bind!

Re: Scene File Settings DVX100A

When? Depends on how much I fiddle with the video and do insert shots and graphics and stuff. I'm not much for graphics so I shouldn't be doing much of that. It'll probably be ready by the end of the Sept., but that's just a wild guess and it depends on how much "real" work I get between now & then.

Re: Scene File Settings DVX100A

Everybody stop asking Barry questions so he can get busy on that DVD :)

I look forward to it.

Re: Scene File Settings DVX100A

Hey Barry,

Are you going to cover the mini35 on your book/DVD combo?

That would be really nice!

All the best

Fidel.

Re: Scene File Settings DVX100A

Hey barry, if theres any footage you would like to use of mine for the DVD or book just ask.

So you're saying that this DVD is going to be about filmmaking, AND features a beauty queen? I don't think any of us will be 'flopsy' after watching that ::)

Re: Scene File Settings DVX100A

Hey... watch it! :)

The mini35 will get a small mention, we shot that intro today and we'll be using my mini35/DVX/JVC HD footage that you've all seen a million times.

Whose bright idea was it to try to shoot 11 pages of dialogue in 4 hours, even with a teleprompter?  Oh yeah, mine... well, good thing we have the location for a couple more days! :)

Thanks for the footage offer... I don't know exactly how much I'm going to have to shoot for this or import from others until we know how much of the narration I can get done... I'll keep y'all posted!

Re: Scene File Settings DVX100A

Are you going to take pre-orders for the book/DVD?

Or, do you prefer to be crushed by the demand once it's ready? :)

Re: Scene File Settings DVX100A

That is really cool!
Even it is a small mention, it is better than not being mentioned.

All the best

Fidel.

Re: Scene File Settings DVX100A

If I were to get crushed by demand, that would be pretty cool!

I'm not so sure about pre-orders... I think it'd be better to have the finished product ready to go, so there are no surprises or delays or whatnot... thanks for the interest, and I'll keep you guys posted. Day 2 of shooting today, and we got about 75% of what I wanted, so now I'll be scheduling a day 3... sigh...

(it has become painfully obvious that I talk too much. Gotta learn brevity! Sharp and to the point. Get in, get out. Don't waste time, don't repeat yourself, don't keep saying the same thing over and over... er, see what I mean?)
